After much internet surfing I ordered a set of Mickey Thompson Baja Radial MTZ in 325/60/18 to go on my '06 F350. I looked hard for Toyo Open Country M/T's, but those are on back order around the world I need full weight rating, so that limited other choices. I would have been happy with BFG MT's, except for the 2910lb rating. Too low for my needs. Checked out ProComps - many fans on this site, for sure. After tossing the bones, reading the tea leaves, consulting with the crystals, etc... I went for the M/T MTZ's.
I'm getting them from www.performancewheel.com. They had the best delivered-to-my-door price. They assured me these will fit on my stock rims, even though M/T says minimum 9" rim - claim they've done it many times. I know I'll wear the center pretty quick, but I can live with that. If it's horrible I'll get some new wheels, but would rather not. I'd rather spend my money on a MileMarker winch. I should have the tires in my hands, then mounted, by the end of next week. Hope I'll be satisfied. If it ever rains again in New Mexico (could happen) I didn't want to be sliding around on the slicks that came stock (Conti-POS). We get some pretty nasty mud at times. Even the miniscule amount of snow we've received this year has given me a couple of hair-raising slides with the Conti's. Very jazzed to move to something I can trust, and work hard, this summer.
Nice move! Be sure to post some pics when you get them mounted. From what I have heard those fit no problem on the stock rims. I can't wait to get rid of the POS Conti's in the near future - I am sliding around all the time and constantly have to use 4x4. Keep us updated!
I got the tires installed a few days ago. M/T Baja MTZs, 325/60/18. I've only got about 300 miles on them, but so far I like them. Definitely do what they are supposed to. Had to pull out of mud and snow yesterday, towing a trailer. Barely needed 4wd. Some whine on the highway, but I barely notice it. Could have gone to 35's, maybe next time. The 33's may actually be a bit smaller than stock - the speedo reads about 2% low. Didn't measure it with stock tires, though, so don't know if anything changed. Overall, feel of the truck hasn't changed from the Conti's, except on ice/snow/mud, of course. They are freakin' wide - 13.5"!
Got the tires from PerformanceWheel.com. Great service and price.
They do look sweet, I was just looking at those tires in "Off Road Adventures" mag, on a Performance Tires & Wheels page,,,looked like a good tread design, I also have an 06' F-350, with the conti's, while I have'nt had trouble in the snow while plowing with them, they r not very good in the mud, and sometimes I need to get in the mud. I have the 18" Polished alum wheels,,,So your truck is stock and they fit OK,?? How much for the set ?
Nice WolfCreek!! They look sweet. I am surprised that you say that they appear to be smaller than the stock Conti's. Those are supposed to measure slightly (very slightly) larger.
m350 - I'm amazed you can plow with your Conti's. I had a terrible time in snow. Even just a couple of inches and I would slide. The truck is stock, and the rims are the stock 18" rims. They cost $287 each, plush about $25 for delivery. At first I thought they were rubbing at full turn, but I'm pretty sure it's just scrubbing.
BlueOval350 - they are so much wider than stock, that looking at them it's for me hard to judge whether they are the same height as the stock Conti's. But, I ran with my GPS, and found that the speedo read about 2% higher than the GPS. I never tried that with the Conti's, so don't know how accurate it was from the factory. But, assuming it was accurate, then the new tires must be slightly smaller. Anyways, I can see why some folks go with the 35's, but for me, every extra inch of height can seem like extra feet at the end of a long day.
The tires balanced easily, and run smoothly, which I guess can be a problem with heavy tires. I had my local Big-O shop mount them, and they had no problems. They don't even look particularly wide for the rims. Probably the center will wear a little fast, but it isn't obvious from looking at them.
Wolf,,: I had no real trouble plowing with the Contis, and I push a 9' Fisher plow also, but I have had them in some slight mud, 2" to 3", and not very impressed, truck would hardly back up my trailer,,just spin, turbo sounded good,,lol, and I know if I had to pull someone out it would be kind of well,,,not good,,thanks for the pricing wolf, truck looks great, and with those tires should pull good in most conditions. Thanks ,,Mark
I second that Wolf! Plowing with the Contis was miserable this season. Have a 8.5 western on my 350 and plenty of ballast in the back. In 2x4 it would just sit and spin. For me, I hate plowing all the time in 4x4 so I would constantly be shifting back and forth from 2 to 4x4 just to get the truck moving from a standstill. Shouldn't have any trouble with the MTZ's though!
