Parking Brake Adjustment

Hello to all from newbie in Spain.
The foot pedal for the park brake on my new-to-me RV travels virtually to the floor and doesn't hold the vehicle.
The chassis is a 1999 F53 Super Duty and has done 35,000miles.
I've searched the forums and found references to finding the brake drum on the driveshaft, removing a rubber inspection plug, and turning a star wheel to adjust the brake shoes.
But mine has no inspection hole and, presumably, no star wheel adjuster.
There is, however, adjustment facility on that end of the brake cable.
So, I have adjusted this by about an inch to give a sensible movement on the foot pedal, and everything works OK.
Can someone advise me whether what I have done is correct?
Where has the pedal travel come from(cable stretch?)?
Should I inspect and, if necessary, change the brake shoes in the near future?
Many thanks.

I would inspect it or get it inspected. Someone could have not fully released the brake and drove around with it partially engaged. A full inch of cable stretch seems like a lot. Better safe than sorry. I would hate to think that during an emergency of not having 100% up to snuff backup braking system
