waaay high RPM's.........

Was driving my 85 full size bronco when i thought the gas pedal was stuck, turns out the motor wont rev below 3000 rpms. Its a 351w with a four barrel. Im thinking it could it be a vacum leak or carb problem. I did find a hose that was loose and when pluged it dropped rpms a little but not enough. Its currently sitting on the side of the raod and i wanna see if i can diagnose it myself before i get it towed somewhere.

Any help appreciated.

a buddy of mine had this problem with his impala, he rebuilt the carb and it dropped back. It may be a choke problem, or another vacuum leak. I'd get some starter fluid, spray around the vacuum lines and intake and see if there's a leak. You may be able to limp it back home if you keep it in the lower gears.

Thanks for the reply, the vacum lines are a mess there are lines un hooked some are plugged with screws. Pretty scary really....i may just have to suck it up and take it somewhere. Driving it like it is, is hard on the brakes.

Make sure your carburetor secondaries are closed.

Look at your carb from the driver's side. There will be a linkage setup that has a cable or two hooked to it. That is your 'primary' throttle. Directly behind that (toward the rear of the carb) may be another linkage that is tied to your primary. Rotate that linkage by hand toward the front (counter-clockwise).

If your carb has vacuum operated secondaries you may only see a shaft sticking out. Grasp that as well as you can and rotate it forward.

Let us know how you do.

Remove the air cleaner and look down into the carburetor. You should see 4 holes with "butterflies" that close them.Depending on what kind of carb you have there may be 2 sets of butterflies on the rear.If there is a set right up at the top of the carburetor stick your finger into them. They should move freely by themselves. There will be anther set underneath these ones at the same level as the front one's.They are linked to the front butterflies by a linkage and should open once the front is opened around half way or more....If the carb only has one set of butterflies on the rear make sure they move freely and shut on there own.

Was driving the truck to the shop and it magically fixed itself. So i had the shop check it out anyway, they cleaned the carb up and adjusted some stuff and fixed my vaccum lines. Also got the brakes done while it was there, my truck has never ran sooo good. Cost me $200 but i think it was well worth it and post due. Ive owned this truck for awhile and havent put any money into cept for gas and a few oil changes and a few other minor things.

$200 is cheap. I'd go thank that mechanic for being honest. Most would have charged you ~$800. Glad to hear you got 'er fixed.
