My 300 I-6 had a major oil blow by issue before I tore it down, although it did run decently. I found broken rings on all the pistons, and 3 of the pistons are broken. Most of the rod bearings are worn smoothly into the brass areas also.
The previous owner said it ran great until the blow by issue suddenly appeared, and only maybe 50 miles have been put on the motor since that happened. I wonder what could have happened to this 125,000 mile motor that would have done this damage?? Any thoughts???
Detonation will break rings right now. Timing could be off, or EGR valve not working right. If you have a manual transmission you are probably lugging the motor too much.
Automatic C-6 transmission and 3.55 gears, and I just bought the truck for $250 with this problem as the reason. I don't think he towed anything, but he probably ran cheapcrap gas, and commuted about 50 miles a day.
Detonation, as stated, and overheating sound like the culprits. Sound like that engine was getting hammered for a while to get that bad. It was probably pinging and rattling for a long time and the po just ignored it until it was too late.
I am looking at some Badger pistons on e-bay. I need to know if these are the same dimensions as the stock Ford factory pistons that are broken, and will they accept the hastings std size rings that I had already bought for this motor. The dimensions are as follows;
