What are some ways to tell if the engine is runnign rich? I'm a little over 900Ft. higher in altitude than where I bought the truck, and last week I walked behind my truck to get some water for the windshield and when I looked down my pants were coverd in little black specks. I'm guessing its running rich but I'm not that familar with this type of thing.
THis is a 66 F-250 with a 352.
Pull a few plugs and check the color. The grounding strap tip should be light tan to almost white colored. Darker means rich. Black with deposits means burning oil, all white with little spots means lean. Cracked insulators and white with little spots means really lean to the point of pinging. Greenish means antifreeze. You can tell a lot by looking at spark plugs.
It's not uncommon for water to condense in the exhaust and carry some carbon with it. Still check the plugs.
Be sure to check back with the results, I get curious about how this kind of thing turns out!
The specs are probably just condensation in the pipe thats getting blown out upon startup/warmup.. Does it do that after it's been driven for a good while ? I live rather close to the beach and every day the marine layer causes this unless your auto is garaged/
K i'll give the plugs a check this weekend. I havn't check to see if the speks still appear after its been running for a while. I'll have to check it when I go home from work today and check it again when I get home.
