Yesterday I was coming back up from the back pasture on a white rock road at about 10mph when my left front hub started squealing. Sounded like metal on metal. I checked to make sure I hadn't picked up any bailing wire or rocks. None that I could see. I have a 99' F250 4x4 with 98k miles. I had put into 4x4 earlier when I was down in the pasture and then unlocked it when I came out of the pasture. About 4 months back the 2/4 wheel drive shift on the fly went out so I've been using manual lock instead. None-the-less, I always put the switch in the matching position to what I have the hubs in. Thought, I would get the left front off the ground in the next couple of days and see if I could turn it by hand with and without the hubs locked. Not sure what to do after that though. Any suggestions appreciated.
A rock must have been the problem. I got the left front off the grounf this morning and turned it by hand. At first I could hear the squeal, and then I heard something rolling/clunking around in there, and then all noises stopped. But I never saw anything drop out of the drum. I drove it around for about 10 minitues with and without the hubs locked and didn't hear any more noises. Things seem okay now. What are the chances that whatever it was is still in there and creating a future problem?
i had the same thing happen last summer the noise quit and havent heard it since. mine went on for about a week though??? also i had if 4x4 for a short distance this winter and when i diengaged 4x4 noise was ther for about 40 miles then no more??
My squeal turned into a new hub assembly - $280 plus an afternoon.
$289 here, "Discovered" it during bj replacement. Damn rotor layed right over on the brake pad bracket.. Never seen that before hope not to see it again. Probably drove it 1500 to 2000 miles that way. My bad and my luck it didn't disintegrate on me. Integral bearings
I had the rock issue as well, thought I'd really torn something up.
Another problem can be those little spring clips that hold the pads off the rotors.
I'm going to do a hub later and will probably get new clips since they rust etc..
How are u guys installing the new seal on the axle ?? DYI or having someone else do it ?
