Replacing 1984 F-150 Rear Main Seal and Oil Pan gasket

There is a nice article on replacing the oil pan gasket in the tech articles section here at FTE. Here is a link (pending approval) to several pics at superford.org on replacing the rear main seal:
rear main seal repair
In 1983, Ford changed from a 2-piece rear main seal on your 351W to a 1-piece version. This means that you have to separate the transmission from the engine to replace this seal. It is alot of work either to drop the trans or pull the engine. If you plan to replace the oil pan gasket, too, it's easier to raise or pull the motor to give you more room to work on the oil pan. I also advise to at least clean out the pick-up tube for the oil pump if you re-use the old pump.
