02 Explorer XLT. 78K on the clock. Wife says the brakes are grinding sometimes. I have heard them squeak. I drove it last nite, and brakes seem fine to me. Nothing unusual, except I feel the pedal is a little low for my taste. Last trip to dealer, they said fronts are getting to where they will need servicing sometime in the future, and provided some numbers indicating front and rear pad wear. I looked at the pads last weekend, and they look serviceable for sometime to come.
Now- in days gone by, adjusting the rear shoes would normally raise the pedal. With 4 whl disk, I can't see this happening! I plan on taking the car to Az, end of April, and want to make sure everything is OK, first. I have no problems putting pads on all 4 wheels, and being done with it. My home "shop" is fairly well equipped, and I am "mechanically inclined" .
What would be recommended for pads? My wife drives this car 99.9%. She is hard on brakes. Semi-metallic or ceramic? No el cheapo's, tho. I would prefer something quiet, long lasting, and low dust. Ford, NAPA, AutoZone? Prefer to get local, not order.
I have 80k on mine and have over 50k on the rear pads and they are still fine. I have put cermic pads on the front the last two times and even though they wear a little faster, they are well worth the extra $. I put them on originally because I couldn't get rid of the squeak, they worked and it is an added bonus that the wheels don't get nasty brown dust all over them.
1081- I see KC, Mo. Thats where my daddy was born!
I don't know the history on the brakes as I purchased this car used. I do know I was not happy with brake dust on wifey's last car. I got the best pads P. Boys had last time around on it, and that helped big time.
