I recenlty bought an '84 regular cab and am finally getting enough spare money where I can spend on a stereo. All previous cars I've had had a regular din-sized receiver, however this truck is different. After looking at mounting kits I found one that looks like it would fit (sorry I don't have actual pictures of my dash at the moment):
I wanted to replace the stock radio with a regular din-sized cd player. Can this be done? The space in the dash looks like it would need some cutting, which I am terrible at - are there any guides on how to do this? or do you guys know of a previous article someone did on their install?
alright i have an 82 and if i remember right the middle of the dash should be the same what i had to do was take out the 2 screws on the plastic cover and then how i did it was i completely cut out the square around where the old radio **** spots were to make just a big rectangle there. with mine the mounting bracket is a 1 piece with the 4 screws which should be the same as yours and the way that it fits up in mine the bracket fits perfectly in the hole when you cut it out
Just installed a cd/mp3 in a 82. Simplest way by far is to first remove the dash pad, (about 7 screws) then remove the plastic panel around the radio. now you have acces all around and inside dash. Install new unit, access from top is the easist way since normally the rear of the new unit needs support. reinstall dash pad, and carefully trim the plastic cover to fit the new required opening. enjoy tunes
The 1985 and 1986 had the newer style radios simular to the ones in the 1990's. They didn't have long shafts for the *****, and the radio bezel already had the hole cut out for the newer style radio as well.
What I would do, is get a radio mounting kit for our trucks, get the wiring kit, so you don't have to splice wires on the main harness. And get a radio bezel for a 1985 or 1986 out of a wrecker, and save all the old parts. This way if you want to sell your truck in the future, and keep the stereo, you have the option to do so, and still be able to replace all the old parts in it to maintain a higher value.
Failing that, you can always sell the older parts, radio, bezel, online.
Im in the same boat..got an 84 and want to put my cd player in and suck at cutting =) Best Buy will do it for less then $20. You need to bring in the cd player sleeve or just bring in your truck.
have a kenwood mp3/cd sirius sat in my 85. had to take the center panel out and cut the supports like the others said. there should be a pic in my gallery. oh the truck doesnt have dents anymore if you were wondering why such a nice stereo went into that truck....
