ok guys, installed the 941 and began to try and get away with non-adj setup but it's looking grim. was wondering what you guys have found to be the best place to buy adjustable setup items such as rockers and pushrods. I know of DSC but don't know anything about them business wise and price wise and also that other guy that takes your payment right away but takes 2 months to send your stuff (ceet)...doesn't sound too good to me. I was looking at napa and you can get a whole shaft, rocker, mount assembly for 109.00 which seems like a steal to me but as for pushrods they're $10 a piece! that sound about right? can you get those pushrods cheaper somewhere else? thanks
kurt those comp rods at summit list as 3/8" rods. Dont' i have to use 5/16" rods with my lifters? and also they list at $95.88! can you use the 3/8" rods with my setup? thanks
ok got better news yet! Crane has the pushrods for $89.50! Now i'm gonna do a little ebaying and see if i can't come up with a good set of used rockers...if not then i'm goin all new which i'll probably end up doing for comfort sake. Do the tips of the pushrods have to be 5/16" and thats it b/c these new mechanical rods are 3/8"?
ok just found these on ebay: 8049200956- complete set of rockers, both shafts, springs, and he says he'll throw in 14 matching rods...sounds too good to be true for $140 but one thing i have a question about is- why don't the ford adjustable rockers have the flat headed screw inside the nutted adjustment part of the rocker? Am i just stuck in Honda land or is this set of rockers on ebay missing them? Do the ford adjustables just use two backnuts against each other to lock down? anyways, sound like a decent deal? He hasn't been on ebay for too long so thats kinda worrying me but i'll get ya'lls opinion. thanks
The stock adjustables don't have a lock nut on the adjuster. The stock adjusters are designed to turn at 7 ft lbs with a pitched thread in the rocker arm. As they become used and wear the adjusters loose their "bite" and back out. You can get into .003 oversize adjusters then but they are no fun sometimes and may require the rockers being tapped .002 to get the breakway torque you need. .002 adjuster screws used to be available but I haven't seen them for years. Other rockers that have been a little more worn took the .003 adjuster just fine. As long as the ebay set has the adjusters still nice and tight it could be a good deal. Check that the shafts have the end plugs in them. I have no idea how good TRW pushrods are. Maybe someone can chime in on those....
well i know napa sells new adjustment screws but i doubt they're the ones speaking of with the pitched thread. Would it be possible to add a stopnut onto the original adjusters to tighten it if indeed they were wore out? If the TRW rods don't work out, i won't mind buying new rods for $95 from summit if i can get the proper length. As far as i can tell though this ebay set looks good but i emailed the guy a slew of a questions to answer so we'll see how he holds up.
I've seen guys use a set of Crane adjusters that come with locknuts on the oem rockers. I'm pretty sure you need to machine the top of the rocker arm for the nuts to clear as they are wider than the stock adjuster. You also need to retap them for the Crane adjusters. Different thread size. I use the Crane ductile iron rockers. They have locknuts on the adjusters. Jegs/Summit sells them for like $199. See what the guy has to say. As long as the adjusters and inner dia of the rockers themselves are good they should be ok. From the pics they look pretty clean. Hard to tell from pics tho how worn they are.....see what he has to say.
Summit sells the Crane pushrods for $89.50. As far a the Ebay listing you better ask questions. He doesn't say what the pushrod are from. I think the only different ones would be the mechanical shell type lifter. You really want ot make sure the shafts are good. Alot of folks on here have complained about used ones they got with alot of slop in them.
If i were to purchase the rocker setup off of ebay, and lets say needed a couple of new rockers, will the crane ones work alright along side the stock ones or would i need to get the adj rockers from napa? also this guy is including 14 pushrods- when i buy the two more that i need, they can be different in length than the 14 and be ok right since i'm working with adj rockers? thanks
well the rocker assembly on ebay is no more so now i'm gonna resort to napa part# 2301024 which is the complete setup: new adjustable rockers, shaft, springs, and stands all for $109. At two thats $218 and then another $89.50 for crane pushrods from summit part# 34645-16. Would someone mind just telling me this is the correct setup- another words would those pushrods match that rocker assembly and that would all match my crane 941. I think i'm on the right track but just looking for some more guidance. thanks again fella's.
ceet, if i remember correct you're running the 901 in your 390 right? did you buy your complete valvetrain setup from dsc and if so what setup did you buy (which rocker assembly and pushrods). what kind of service did they give you and how long was the wait on the arrival of your parts? i had a friend telling me i should get the rocker assembly with the rocker spacers and not the springs but my engine is a very mild build with merely an aftermarket crane 941 cam and the rest being stock. woulnd't i be fine with the assembly with the springs b/c i'm not gonna wind my 390 past 5000 rpms.
nevermind, did the smart thing and searched and found your recent post ceet, why is his service so bad??? i can't wait no two months for my stuff to come in!! i need it in a week and a half! is there any hope going through DSC?? has anyone had a good experience with this guy aside from just getting good parts? Is there another guy out there with comparable pricing and good service?
