I know of a way to make the flame bigger but I need a switch that has 2 diffrent on settings like a 3 way house switch. I want it to control the power going to the coil on the engine. I want to both kill the engine and redirect the power to the rear coils with the flip of one switch. It needs an on off on setup. This may not make any sense to you but I know what I am talking about.I want one setting to be run and the other flames. Does any body know what this switch is actually called and where I can get one that looks something like a toggle switch
Wouldn't a hand choke work to richen the mixture without cutting off the ignition to the motor?Just a thought.Try not to blow anything up while your doing this.LOL
I don't have a manual choke. I don't have a choke at all actually. It doesn't work. I have to pump the pedal like 20 times when its really cold out side. Its not to bad during the summer however. I just live with the dogginess until it warmes up. I might convert it to a manual choke.
Helped my cousin do this on his 56 Chevy back in the mid 60's ,when we were young and dumb. A neighbor, an antique gear head, told us how. We got a Model T coil from JC Whitney. Don't remember why we had to use a Model T coil. Small block of steel drilled and tapped to fit the plug. Wielded the steel block over a hole drilled in tail pipe close to exit. Simple toggle switch for power. Most importantly, a manual choke. Pull choke out all the way and hit the switch.
The results were.........awesome. Full throttle produced flames 10 ft long as he raced thru the gears. Looked like a rocket car at night. Everything went well for a couple of weeks until he inadvertenly hit the switch while working on the car. Roasted the front end of his dad's car in the driveway. It was removed before his dad allowed him to drive again. He mowed grass for a long time to pay for the damage to the car. Tried to rope me into help paying for it too. No thanks.
Had to reply to this post. As you young bucks have figured out by now, the flaming exhaust have been around for a while. The last one I saw cracked me up. And it was not even in use. But I knew what it was and what it had to look like at night. I saw it at a ugly truck contest in Shedd Oregon.
Picture this at night. This truck had one exhaust, I think it was a I6, comming straight up out of the pasenger front fender. On top of that was a tin man head with holes cut for eyes and sharp teeth. The face faced forward for on comming viewing. The owner said it was not all that loud. I hope I see it at night sometime. At least I will know what I saw.
81ford, What you need is a spdt switch (single pole double pole switch). This type of switch as an on-off-on, flip it up-ignition is on, flip it center-nothing on, flip it down-flame thrower is on.
The hot side of your coil wire goes to the center contact, your ignition goes to the top contact, and you coil for the thrower goes to the botton contact.
I think this is what you are looking for.
you can pick one up at an electronics supply store or radio shack.
The center poaition will also work as a kill switch for a little extra theft protection.
Please use caution.
BTW if you plan on using it a lot, you may want to clean you sparkplugs often and smell your dipstick for gas.
from what i have seen with the flame thrower kits youare going about the spark plug and coil situation correctly but i'm not sure if i would wire it to the tach either.....you need a solenoid to give the exhaust the unburnt fuel to use so you don't have to rev it to the moon to get a rich mixture...as far as i know this is the proper way and they are inexpensive in a kit ($30or so) so i'd do some more research, it is however easily done once you have installed the plug and coil
I don't see how a solenoid is going to get more fuel to the plugs unless its a fuel injecter. Please explain bettter. I want it to work as good as posible.
I was working on my truck yesterday and a bunch of my friends wanted to see my flames. It normaly won't work until it is warmed up real good. I tried a couple of times but got nothing. They had pretty much gave up on seeing any flames when I gave it one last try and when I did I heard it light and everybody start yelling and stuff They said it was very cool looking. My auto teacher even wanted to see it work. I thought that he would say that it was dum but he gave me tips on how to make it do better. I was so proud of myself.
Welll all i can say is keep it on it looks sweet anything with fire coming out of it looks sweet. This has been the first time i heard of this some people i know have some of these
Now, you need to take some deisal and inject it into your exhaust, and let it smoke up a storm, smoke screen for when you get caught with your flames on...
I like it! If there is a way to only cut out one cylinder at a time while the engine is running then it could make flames non-stop and the engine still run alright. Rev. limiters work like that so your switch could turn the rev. limiter on at a very low rpm (3000 or so) then the unburned gas from each cylinder in turn would flow out to your tailpipes. The flame coil could be wired in parallel with the engine coil and then put on a switch. This setup should keep the engine running and minimize fouling the plugs and oil.
