house plant problem!!!!!!!

this question is for my wife, she planted all sorts of flowers and plants and stuff, now a couplle here and there get these little fly thing that eat them! and also, a couple has these little bug things(very small) in the dirt that eat the roots.

she has changed out the soil and such, and we have used 2 different sprays but it seems that the sprays kill the flies, but others escape and go somewhere else, and the sprays, the baby flowers die from it.

and the strange thing is, it only happens in one part of our flat, if we move the plants to the other side of the room or 2 the bedroom, the flies and little bugs don't effect it. unless they are infected with it already.

it would be nice to say move all the plants, but its just a 2 room flat.

thanks.

If it's what I'm thinking of, this comes about from overwatering and keeping the soil overly moist. Visit a garden store/greenhouse and explain the problem. There is a product that is very effective in quickly stopping this. I'm not sure on the other one; can you determine if they are aphids? Color and size?

i passed the watering info to my wife "to much taking care of"

the flies, we don't know much about bugs to say what kind, but they are small(like a little ant) and grey. they only hang around wet pllants, if don't water for awhile, they are not around, but the minute water gets put on them....they come. but the baby flowers die she said if not to water them.

thanks!

I have to agree with CowboyBilly9Mile. Do a web search on fungus gnats...pretty sure those are exactly what you are looking for.

Just pray you never get an infestation of "SPIDER MITES" - those are the worst you can imagine.

Malathion will kill them, but you have to keep on killing them as the eggs hatch out.

I remembered the product name; Gnatrol. I remember those pesky insects buzzing around, especially during watering. In general watering once a week is about right; a bit more frequent if they see lots of light and/or if the room is extra warm. The opposite applies in winter. Also, get to know the plant; some just need more water than others. It's ok to let the soil get dry before the next watering. They also have moisture gauges available and they are pretty inexpensive.
