I have a '64 F-250, if you didn't already know..., tranny code "F". It is a 4 spd/granny. Now since I'm planning on rebuilding an engine to swap in this summer, I was wondering if there was an overdrive tranny, or at least a normal 4 spd that would bolt in in this ones place? I have 4.56:1 gears in the D60 rear end, so I was hoping to improve my mileage (6-8mpg).

Thanks guys,
-Andrew

Andrew- overdrive trannys are frightfully exspensive, can you swap out those 4.56's? I'd be looking for some 3.5's if it were me. Can you run taller tires? Every little bit helps. DF

your tranny runs the same final drive as any 3spd or 4spd (xcept auto) out there.
the only thing you could do is try to find a 5 spd out of a bus or big truck...
i cant remember off hand if you are runnin a "y" or an "fe"
but if youre runnin a Y i'd go with tires or gear just like stated b4

If I do tires, then I need air bags or air shocks to raise the back; or maybe some bigger blocks. I have 31" tires right now, and I'm running a 292 Y-block. I've never dealt with differentials before, and I'd rather not tear into it anytime soon; Umm., With a small lift in the back I could probably get away with 33 or maybe 35 inchers on the back, and I need tires anyway (They'll be showing AIR soon! :-)) That's probably the way I'll go for now...

Any more ideas?

I just thought of something...My car ('77 Monarch) has 3.00:1 gears in a (I think) Ford 8.8" axle, behind a 302/C-4. This would be a very slight chance, but those gears in the 8.8 wouldn't happen to be compatible with my D-60 posi would they?

77 monarch will be a 7.5....maybe an 8 inch.
wouldnt swap them. 8 inch is good...you can tell cause a 8 inch has no removeable cover..looks like a mini 9 inc h

I just found in Summit that they sell re-gear kits for most axles; but the highest (numerically lowest) ratio they have for a D-60 is 4.10...$170 I think. I did some reading and the difference between the 8.8 and the D-60 is .075. I realize my car doesn't have the 8.8, but Summit has considerably more choices for rear ratios in the 8.8. Would these work?
I just don't know how much of a difference it will be going from 4.56 to 4.10

Thanks!

Sorry, just a little clarification; the difference between ring gear diameters is .075, with the 8.8 being (obviously) 8.8", and the D60 bieng 8.875

So, can anyone tell me the difference that 4.10's will make as compared to my 4.56's??

The thing with the 3way is that I've never even opened a diff., and I'm not wanting to get into anything I can't handle...
As for the 3+1, will it bolt in place of my T-18? I have a 292 Y-block...and where are you located?

Thanks!

I just re-read your post on the 3-way swap; would this just be a straight across trade, all pays shipping on the gears he sends out? Also, would this affect my posi-trac at all? You'll have to get with me at the address below.

well i was just thinkin ring an pinion swap
you could keep your posi.
what is it factory track lok or somethng?
anyhoo...and it'd be a great time to do the bearings and seals.
if your into takin stuff apart...then get a manual..
and pull it apart. and go from there.

it is, it's factory trac-loc. I'd love to do it, I get 4.10's in the end? So, just the ring, and pinion gears...is that all I'd have to pull? I've been looking for a good reason to pull the axle apart anyway, just to replace the seals didn't work for me.

Let me know off list, my e-mail address is below.
