ok i am fixing up my 88 f250 4x4. i changed it over from fuel injected to carburated. i want this thing as loud as i can get it. im putting long tube headers on it and i will need a whole new exhaust. so i dont know if i should put straights on it because i dont want to burn my valves up. do you think it will be ok? well i am leaning more to true duals with glass packs. with the headers how loud do you think that will be because its carbed and wont be as loud as EFI
The only way you can "burn the valves up" is if you ran it with no headers or exhaust manifolds at all. Long tube headers alone would prevent valve damage. You just need something after the cylinder heads.
If you want it loud, match the collector size and run pipe to the rear of the vehicle, with no muffler, glasspack, or anything. You dont want it to exit any closer than the rear tires, since carbon monoxide can do very bad things to you.
It will be loud, it will be harsh, and I suspect you'll get sick of it within 10 minutes. But if that's what you want, go for it!
all engines require some back pressure ..get some flowmasters and run true dual out behind rear tires ,,,if not flowmasters than a cheap set of mufflers ...or a setup up with dual in dual out
ok well i dont want mufflers the only thing id put on there would be glass packs. see when i get the headers on i have to run it about 5 mintues to get the boys house that does exhaust. how loud do u think it will be
Wrong. Look at funny cars or dragsters. 4 curved open pipes sticking out from each side. Think they have backpressure? No. Do they run? Oh yeah. Another example is my lawn mower. It has a V-twin motor, with a pipe per side that dumps into a giant open can with a hole on the bottom. Came that way factory. What you want is a well tuned exhaust, where the exhaust pulses scavenge the cylinder. Straight pipes and long tube headers is the easiest way to accomplish this, since there is no muffler to dampen the exhaust pulses. Very loud and annoying of course, but very effective.
It will be extremely loud with just headers. 5 minutes would probably be alright, just roll the windows down to reduce the in cab noise, and let the fumes out. Dont forget your earplugs.
i know its going to be loud with just headers. but i wanna know how loud you think it will be with true duals with glasspacks. i had a 86 f150 once that was carbed and had true duals with g packs and flowmasters were louder than that. do you think it will crack when i get on it with g packs? im wondering if this is gonna be like the 86 i had because it was quite
Sound of exhaust depends greatly on the diameter of the pipe, length of the pipe and how straight it is, think of it like a pipe organ, all the sounds have the same compressor running them.
I had an 82 F150 with a 351W, 2in straight pipe exhaust. Dual exhaust with an X pipe. This truck was LOUD, you could here me coming a mile away, only problem was the law could hear me to. I got into alot of trouble with that exhaust.
I currently have an 86 F150 with a 460 in it, Running 2 1/4 in exhaust down the passager side with glass packs, I like it there is really no cackle until I let off the throttle after having it rapped up pretty good.
Both trucks had the rear dump manifolds, no headers.
ok well i am using homemade glasspacks. they are 5 inches long. and cheaper that what you can buy them for in any magazine. see my trucks 4x4 and you cant run an x pipe. but any exhaust iv ever seen on a ford truck the pipes were ran to the passenger side. so thats what i plan to do. i was thinking 2 inch pipe but someone said do 2 1/4. i think im gonna do 2 inch for shore though
i'd go either 2-1/4" to 2-1/2" no bigger than 2-1/2 because 3" is the next size.... 2-1/2 is plenty big enough for a mild to performance 460 bored and stroked..... just my $0.02. I'd go 2-1/2" personally, plenty big enough but not too big
well i got longtubed headers on my 302 EFI i ran them straight back ending with a pair of glasspacks. Sounds pretty throaty and loud, especially when i get over 3000rpm. i know i personally wouldnt want it any louder as it can get annoying if your driving a long ways.

i finally got my exhaust done...275 buck for true dual straight pipes. wow its so loud i love it. i pipe everybody n im gettin the worst gas mileage ever now for piping people. it was done in 2 1/4 pipe with 3 1/2 stainless steel tips on 45s
