I'm getting ready to box the frame of my 55 f1 and I don't know what to do about the inside of the frame. Do I need to blast it, blast and prime it, blast prime and paint, por - 15 it or do nothing? Oh yea, I'm gonna have it powder coated.
What I did since I step boxed it (which I would recommend) is to blast it, prime it at the to be welded edges with weld thru prime and then mask the weld thru primer at the edge and prime the rest of the inside of the box with black epoxy prime. I used the same method on the inside of the boxing plates. Make sure that you address ALL bolt thru locations on the frame with weld in nuts, captive nuts, ability to thru bolt or provide an access hole to get to the nut. lol
does anyone know of a company that sells precut boxing plates for the 53-56?
Dave,
What I did on my 48 was make cardboard templates and take them to a local metal supply shop where they cut them out of 1/8 inch plate. It was inexpensive and saved me a lot of time and labor. I think I paid about $25 for it. The shipping alone might cost you that much for mail order...
I have not painted my frame yet but I plan to sandblast the entire frame (all accessible areas) and then paint it. I do not know about powdercoating, however I would not think that the pinnt inside the box would be a problem since you will not be trying to powdercoat those areas. I would ask my friendly powdercoat place.
I made my own boxing plaes trom 1/8 steel. It was both cheap and easy.
One thing that I did and I would recommed is to reinforce (welded to) the backside of the boxing plates (I used pieces of 3/16 plate that I had) where my engine mounts are welded to.
With the 48 I am helping build with my Dad we used a Plasma and ground 10 gage sheet to fit and weld in. The grinding after welding is the worst part when making a nice finish for paint. As you can see the pictures in my gallery addition stiffening is nice. You can all most pick up one corner and 3 wheels come off the ground. good luck with your project.
