I washed my engine the other day and on the way home the engine light came on. It started running rough, and and has had a rough idle ever since. I took it to autozone and they read the code. It says "305 Cylinder 5misfire detected". I was looking to see if I had knocked anything loose and didn't see anything. What should I do? I don't know the firing order to be able to check cylinder 5. Anyhelp is appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. I talked with a mechanic friend of mine and he told me to never wash the engine. And that it sounded like the ignition coil was bad. I would rather fix this myself than pay his labor.
#5 is the front plug on the lh side (drivers side). Pull off the coil and blow out the plug hole. You probably have water from washing down the plug hole.
Not to sound like an idiot, but I have never jacked with this engine. From what I can tell, the plugs must be on top of this engine rather than the sides like older engines. If I am right about that, then maybe I am right when I assume the coil is bolted down? I see what I think are 8 coil packs that have a single bolt holding them down. These are under the fuel rails. Right??
Most people who have these trucks only wash the engine once or go through a drive thru auto wash only once! The COP (one for each plug) hates water. Get them wet and you get a code. That is likely your problem. If you do a search on this forum you will find lots of info.
Are we sure #5 is the front drivers side? That seems to easy. I figured it would be in the back. haha. I will try blowing it out tomorrow. Should I clean it with contact cleaner, or just blow it out?
I took the cop out and blew out the hole where the plug is. I can't believe what all came out of there. I cleaned the cop with contact cleaner and then blew it out. Put everything back together and check engine light went off.
I seen another thread about a sticky gas pedal. Cleaned my throttle body and now thats good.
Thanks for all your help. It saved me $50 for that cop and no-telling how much on a mechanic.
