I had a friend ask and I couldn't tell him, so I'll ask here. Can the tail shaft on a C6 or an FMX be put on upside down and cause the speedo cable to be on the wrong side?

A friend, huh? I won't ask. I do not believe it is possible on either tranny due to the bolt pattern.

Thanks Thom, I didn't want to go lay on the cold ground and crawl under my truck to look at the bolt pattern for him. I know you have all those drawings that you like to use, so you would know.

I did look for a good image to post too; I guess I read like an open shop manual, huh? I did find one image of a 1961 Cruise-O-Matic which I think is either the FX or MX. The image wasn't of just the tailshaft either. I then looked in a C6 diagnostic book, but the images there were no better. Tell your friend to just make sure the speedo is on the left side, that is right, right? :-)

I think he posted here a while back, but he sent me a personal email and I couldn't help, and as much as I like to help, I cast my net in more deeper fertile water, for an answer. :-)

I haven't had much experience with the FMX, but I know a C-6 tailhousing can't be bolted on upside down by somebody that is concious - the gasket and bolt pattern are far from symmetrical! Also, there's a parking pawl and its actuating mechanism in there too! Every Ford I've ever seen has the speedo cable on the left (driver's) side.
Perhaps the speedo is not working because of a incorrect/stripped speedo gear or a cable problem?
Suggest he turn the driveshaft (with rear axle on jackstands) and see if the cable turns at the speedometer. If not, inspect the speedo gear itself.
Art thanks, Seems that his connector is on a different side than everyone elses, and the cable won't reach. I think we batted it around here a while back, and he emailed me directly, so I thought I'd pitch that idea here to see which way it fell.

The C6 tail housing came with two different styles of speedo- cable housings. One used the plastic driven gear that used a c-clip to retain the gear to the cable and it pushed into the housing. the driven gear was right-hand heix and the cable inserted into the housing from the drivers side. this style matches the way the passenger cars used the cable.
The second style was common on the short output shafted C6's with the fixed yoke/4-bolt plate. this style used a steel driven gear and was retaine with a nut. the speedo-cable screwed onto the adapter nut on the tailshaft housing, and it was on the passenger side. the to styles are not compatable at all. you will need to have a speedo shop make a custom length cable or find one long enough in a junk yard.
