My truck 78 f150 400 auto, will not turn over when I turn the key. I have replaced the starter solenoid but no change. I was told that there is a switch in the steering column that may be the problem. It does start when I turn the power on and then short the terminal on the solenoid, but it is cold outside. It would be much appreciated if anyone out there has any advice on what the problem is.
I would suspect your neutral safety switch. Mine is mounted
on the side of the trans where the levers pivot. It had
4 wires-2 were neutral safety and two were backup lights. Maybe
you can wiggle the shifter a little bit and it will try to
start.
Mark before you crawl under your truck, try putting it in N and see if it will crank, or hold the switch on and jiggle the selector, in both positions. I believe the auto has a switch on top of the steering column just above the floor, and the st. dr. under the truck. I might be mistaken but it could be easier to check before getting on the cold ground. The 76 auto column that I put in my truck had one there.

John, thanks for replying. I found out a later truck I
have does not have a switch at all, but is mechanically
interlocked in the column. I would hate to post missinformation
and cause a guy alot of work for nothing.
