The 4L v6 in my van has started to leak oil from the rear end gasket of the intake manifold. Maybe the front is as well, but I can't see it without taking off some hoses and wires. I know the correct fix for this is to pull the intake and replace the gaskets, using a bead of RTV in the front and rear instead of the normal cork/rubber end gaskets. But I just don't have the time right now.
Has anyone been able to even temporarily stop the leak by glopping on RTV around the seams where the intake joins the head and block? Assuming, of course, that you thoroughly clean the area first to allow the RTV to stick.
I have done this successsfully on a chevy small block. If you do this remember to not use the vehicle for 2 days to allow complete curing of the rtv. It won't hurt to snug all bolts up too. Make sure your pcv system is in top shape to keep crankcase pressures down.
use this with long spray tube nozzle, loosen bolts and spray into gap, let tack up for an hour and tighten down
has more adhesion than RTV, has cleaners in the composition
Bolts on the manifold felt pretty tight. At least the ones I could reach.
I got in there and scrubbed the area out with Simple Green and then sprayed it down with Gumout just for good measure. It's really difficult to get in there with your fingers, but I think I gooped enough high-temp red RTV around the seams. I'll wait a couple days before driving it to see whether it holds or not.
That Permatex spray sealer looks interesting. I'll try that if the rtv doesn't work.
