1988 E150 Conversion Van swap

I am not sure this is the correct forum for this topic so I may post it elsewhere as well but I have a 1988 Ford E150 Conversion Van that is rapidly approaching the 300,000 mile mark. This has the original 5.0 302 and AOD transmission. The oil was constantly changed and filters replaced. The biggest repairs I have ever had to do was replace the distributer and Alternator. The engine has and remains very dependable but is starting to develope a rod knock and has excessive valve train noise. It does not burn oil and it still starts no matter how cold or wet it gets but I do alot of traveling with this and am considering pulling the engine and rebuilding it or replacing it with a 1991 302 from a Lincoln Towncar.I have been told there is a difference between car engines and truck and have seen this mentioned in catalogs that I have been looking at for rebuild kits. Can somebody explain this to me and offer their thoughts on which of these 302's are a better engine for my Van.I have been told that the Lincoln may be a "roller"? engine and that that is the better engine but would like to see what I am told here..In either case I plan on rebuilding whatever engine I decide to use.I do alot and I mean alot of towing with this Van,I have towed everything from a fullsize International school bus to a 10 ton dump to a 1977 F250 4X4 on my trailer so any suggestions on what I may want to due while I have the engine apart would be helpful as well. Thanks
