Steel prices

I figured I'd post here, since we tend to do a good bit of fab work...

I just ended up paying $42 for two sticks of 1" square 1/8" wall tube 10 feet long [20ft total, for anyone who couldn't understand my cro-magnon speak]...

Did I get hosed? or is the going price of tube a lot higher than I thought???

Thats about right.

I'm glad to see everything hot-rolled still hasn't gone up too much since thats what I mostly use, but anything made from sheet, like tubing, square and round, and pipe is getting pretty expensive. Has been expensive for a while I mean

Wow. it is pretty dear then.. my dad thought he could get it cheapier, so i am gonna have him price some. my order was:

20 ft of 1"x1"x1/8"
2'x3' of 16 gauge sheet metal
2' of 1/2" cold rolled round stock

and it was like $63 dollars...

I guess we can thank capitalism...

And oil prices aren't helping anything either.

Yeah, steel has gone thru the roof in the last 2 years. I bought the channel iron for my bumper, and it was $20. A year later, which was last year, I bought about 30 ft of 2" thin wall square tubing, and it was around $60. I can't remember exact info, but that is ballpark. When I bought the stuff, the guy said it goes by the pound. If that is so, then the channel iron should have cost me about $600
I have found it is better to scrounge and save it up for a rainy day. Of course, my wife LOVES the pile of junk in the yard

That's why these days I don't buy "new" steel unless I absolutely have to. We have a steel recycler just down the street from me. They sell for 25 cents a pound, no matter what you're getting. If I check them regularly I can find almost anything, including good diamond plate, tubing and sheets. The first set of drop hangers I built for the truck cost $120 in steel (new). The set that's on there now cost me $15. In the warmer months I try to get by there once a week to check out what they have and buy a little something each time.

I was saving a bunch of steel to turn in as scrap. Had lots of big 8" diameter 3/8" wall pipe and a few hundred pounds of other smaller stuff. I called around to see how much they would give me. Best price I could get was $63.00 a ton - not even worth my time. You get screwed on both ends of the steel market currently.

im all about the used metal deals, i priced a new 20' stick of 4" square tubing and it ranged from $65 to $120 ...then i found a place that sells the old stuff for 35 cents a pound..i ended up with 2 15' sticks of 4" square tubing and 2 8' lengths of 6" pipe, all for $104.04 after tax...only thing wrong with em is a little surface rust thats easily sandable...now i need to get off my **** and build my crossmembers and pipe bumpers!!

Yup, I try to avoid buying new at all...the prices are ridiculous. We've got a pretty good scrap yard in Clackamas that I use. I was just looking at the price of tube for my cage and it made me sad in pants

I'm in Salt Lake City, I called three or four places. The $63.00 / ton was the best I could find. One was down in the $40 range. That was in October I think, now I have steel lying around at work and in my driveway. I'd just as soon hide in the trash as give it away to a company that's going to make an 800% profit off of it.

In the Atlanta GA area steel is over $1 a pound. I paid $60 for a 2"x4" x 1/8 wall x 9' for my trailer tongue I twisted, that hurt. I try to buy used steel whenever possible, but, you can not always get in in the size you need when you need it. It runs $0.50 a pound of less if you buy over 1,000 pounds.

I know it is not the best stuff to use, but, I built a good deal of 5x9 trailer (rehacked boat trailer) trailer out of steel bed frames That stuff is way harder to drill then the reg. ASM50# steel.
