Hey guys, now that I've got all that crazy lowering business out of my head, I've been wanting a factory restore with some attention to creature comforts, and I've been kicking around the idea of getting another '64 3/4 ton, and make the 2 into 1. Whichever one is in better shape, use the other for parts. Now, suddenly I have access to another '64 3/4 ton, for a very reasonable price. I was just wondering if this is too much for me to handle? How hard is it to put 2 of the same year trucks into 1?

Andrew.
You are finally getting smart. Actually, this is the proper way to get a really good truck with minimum expense. As we all know, parts are starting to get rare for our old trucks, so use everything you can from the two you have.
Take your time to evaluate which one you want to be the project and which one you choose to be the donor, then, get started.
My personal opinion: If you are going to do a frame off restoration, use the bad truck for the chassis and leave the good one until you need to mount the body, etc.
****Work from the ground up and leave the motor, fancy wheels and tires, etc to the very last. Don't hurry, don't get ahead of yourself, and do it right the first time. You will have something to be proud of when you get done.
After all, how many '61-66 F-100's do you see at your average stoplight?
If you need help, you got plenty here.
Good luck.

That is an excellent idea, buying another and making one good one. After studying all my many vendor catalogs, I bought a rusty 72 for parts for my 66. It is amazing how many parts, besides the usual front end, driveline, and steering are interchangeable. Things like heater cores, pedal mounting shafts, and much more. Save all your parts until the last, if you lean towards restoration, you will be surprised everytime you find a screw or bracket on the parts truck that is just a little better than what you have.

I think it's a very good idea! Seems how the truck you are getting is in good shape!

OMG!! I had a good Idea! This will (hopefully) be coming together sometime in March, thanks to Q_ball! Then, I strip my truck, save whatever's good, and send the rest off to the junk man.

OK, so here's my plan...open for some tweaking from those who've been there-done that.
The truck i'm getting from Q_ball is the exact same as the one I have, but mine is without the exterior chrome package: '64 F-250, LWB, 4spd., custom cab, 292. Mine is going to be the donor, as it's in sad shape.

1-pay for o/d tranny (I've already commited, although it's less than $400!)
2- save $$ and buy new ('64) truck
3- register and drive new truck
4- strip old truck, and save everything usable.
5- sand blast and paint the old frame
6- rebuild old suspension (possible PDB, PS swap here)
7- rebuild old engine, install on old frame
8- install o/d tranny (old frame)
9- Put new truck on old frame, using the best parts from both trucks, and sanding/painting each part before it goes on.
10- sell whatever's left, and hopefully make some money back. whatever can't be sold will either be kept (small parts) or sent to the junk man (rusted body panels, frame)

any ideas?

I have done this with my 67 F250 4x4. removed the old body sand blasted the frame and primed with a zinc-chromate primer and painted with dupont paint. every part that was savable was saved any part that i could buy new i did,i.e,bearings, races, brakes, rebuilt the 352 with lots of xtra's, used my 70 body, redid the floors, cabmountsand other tid-bits, and wha-la 1 nicely off frame resoration. It will take alot of time and money.

I would pop in a new set of king pins and brass bushings while I was redoing the front end. Much easier while it is taken from the frame.

Hello,
Your comment about rebuilding the original 352 intrigued me. My half ton came with a 352, which unfortunately is MIA now. Currently the truck has a 302 out of a 70' Mercury Montego, and I am trying to decide weather to go 390 or try to find a 352 to rebuild. What are your thoughts?

Someone explain the 352 to me... I've heard talk of the engine, but don't know too much about it. What family is it? What years was it used?

LAST EDITED ON 14-Jan-01 AT 03:02 PM (EST)[p]The 352 is one of the 2 original bb. the 332 and the 352. All the FE's (390,428,406,427,410,360) were cast with the 352 on the front of the engine,or an upside down 105, this only means that they are of the original engines. It is a very strong engine and is worth the rebuild, of coarse there is "no replacement for dicplacement" but like i said the engine is a good one, All (most) of the fe part's are interchangable, and endless. Ihope this helps. The 352 was produced from 58 to 67 ,65 being the last in car's the last 2 went to truck's then was changed to the 360 in 68.
