I have tried to find any hard info on what splines would be in a given truck. I pulled mine the other night and it has 31. From what I have been able to find, most 4x4's had 31, while some 2wd's and most cars had 28. I'm not sure engine size had much to do with it, my truck originally had a 300. I also never found that the years had a lot to do with spline count. I'll give you the best advice I could find, pull an axle and count. It only takes about an hour in and out.
Dave,
79 F-150 4x4, 390 w/C6, Edelbrock carb, 33X12.50 never will be finished.
When I changed axle ratios in my girlfriend's 1968 F100 (360/T-18 drivetrain), it had 28 spline axles. So does my 1969 F100, and every other 1967-1972 2WD F100 I've ever seen.
I have seen 31 spline axles used in 4x4's as far back as 1973, and also as standard equipment in late 70's 2WD trucks as well.
