A/C staying on

I have a 95 Mazda 2300 5 spd. During the winter months I was wondering why the a/c system stays on when you use the heat. I can feel the lack of power and it feels like the compressor kicking in and out while driving. Is this normal?

Is there a way to turn it off.....this is taking away about 2 MPG versus spring and fall where I dont have to run either A/C or Heat.

You aren't losing MPGs from the compressor. Well, not as much as you are from winter fuel blends if you live in a colder area of the US.

~2 MPG loss isn't as bad as some of what I've heard recently from other Ranger owners up north...

The reason the compressor runs is to keep it lubricated during winter months. That helps keep the seals, etc in shape so they don't blow when you turn on the AC after several months of not using it. There are 2 vent settings (1 for heat, 1 for vent), that the compressor does not run. Other than that, you'll probably have to hook up an interrupt switch and relay.
