Our '55 F-100 project that came in a box has the volare front end with power steering box installed and a 70's GM steering column with it. Both have a splined shaft coming out. Who should I see about getting the parts it takes to link these two together ? Thanks, Joe
Hey Joe Welcome to the club......U can use Flaming River or Borgeson joints...Most of your Hot Rod Restoral Places Like Mid Fifty have these...But sometimes you can get them cheaper going direct...
If I remember right the volare box had a 5/8" splined shaft and the Chevy column probably has a 1" - 48 spline shaft... Borgeson or F. R. can supply those and tell them you want a 3/4" spline on the other end of each... once you have the universals installed you can measure for the intermediate shaft, leaving about a 1/4 on each end for removal... I've got a pic in my Volare article of how it hooks up
just be sure that you've considered headers, shift linkage, motor mounts and anything that might get in the way on the drivers side of the engine before you work up your steering linkage... a tip... you can use 3/4" wood dowel for fitting up the shaft and ujoints for a good measuring stick... and it will show you the clearances are there also...
good luck...
john
did some more looking and here's what I found... My order list for Borgeson... this is in polished stainless so it ain't cheap... but gives you the sizes I used with a Caddy Column and the Volare front clip..
Chrysler Box 5/8” x 36 spline #636c SSP15N-636CX736 142.07
GM Column 1” x 48 spline #148 SSP15N-148X736 142.07
Shaft 3/4” splined both ends SSP736X4.25X2 74.63
prices scare you ??? these are 1999 prices !!!!! but carbon steel are cheaper...a little
I did the 3/4 on Double D between the Borgeson joints on mine. Using an Ididit column. Easy to slide out,as it passes thru my headers, and easy to re-align cause of the D shape. (and the DD shaft is easily cut, where the spline shaft has to be pretty closely measured)
You may want to use just plain steel joints with a double "D" intermediate shaft (it's a lot cheaper). If you want to see that assembly look in my steering column gallery. I am using a flaming river column and it isn't splined but they make a joint that is splined on one end and a double 3/4 double D on the other end. My front susp is a volare.
You can buy parts from Borgeson Universal Co, phone 860-482-8283, www.borgeson.com.
look in the Mid-50's catalog. They sell a kit that has the double-D shaft that you cut to length. If you are not comfortable with their prices or service, use the info gained there to shop around for the u-joints and shaft.
I should have been clearer.. I JUST did mine, 2 weeks ago.. I'll post pics this weekend (if I can remember to take the camera out to the garage with me!).
I was originally concerned with cutting the solid DD shaft length because it has to pass thru the headers, but my hotrod shop son showed me just where to cut it so that it slips in and out easily when required. At the edge of the curved flare on the end of the borgeson joint. that will allow enough clearance to undo the lock screws and pull the joint off and shaft out.
