Hello all. Been a while since i posted.
I did a tranny flush on my 99 exp 4WD and when i put the new fluid in it was full at just about 4 quarts. I find this kind of strange because the last time i did this it took 5 qts.
Any help is appreciated.
Yes it is the same as the last time. I drained what was in the pan cleaned it and changed the filter and a fill up. This time is different i dont know why.
If you drained the pan, you won't always get the same amount out of the tranny. Some fluid always stays inside the transmission and the cooling lines, etc. A true flush is having air forced through the lines to get all of the fluid out.
Changing it the way you did it was fine, at least you got some new fluid in it. If you do it more often, the fluid will look cleaner each time since you'll still be draining some older fluid out.
if you pm jharger he will give you a link where you can do a complete flush of the tranny fluid. if you have the tranny oil cooler its super easy. i would give you the link but somehow i lost it...
I always find the amount of fluid in the transmission after a flush to be a complete mystery. I rely on good judgement when refilling and the dipstick to get it right. I always re-check several times over the next couple of days/weeks.
Also...
I have removed the fluid by dropping the pan (as usual) and recently began following up by blowing out the coolant lines by disconnecting them at the front of the truck near the rad (at the cooler). Even gravity can remove a couple extra ounces of fluid if you disconnect the lines. Starting the truck with the lines disconnected blows out a ton of fluid at a intense velocity but I don't recommend this method. Some guys I know who want to do a quick flush and fill without dropping the pan (and replacing the filter) do it this way but it's quite a scene.
