beef up the c6

i'm looking into having a shop rebuild my c6 in my f-150 4x4 and i was wondering if anyone has some good tips on beefing up those transmissions for towing, larger tires, hp engines ect.,that i could tell the mechanic what i want. also would an aftermarket torque converter with a lower stall speed give me more pulling power off idle? my truck has a stock 351m engine that's been rebuilt and has 3.50 axle ratios. thanks.

LAST EDITED ON 18-Jan-01 AT 04:29 PM (EST)[p]A C-6 is pretty beefy as it is. Excessive heat is the death of any transmission. A shift improver kit will reduce slippage when shifting. Above all I would highly recommend installing a trans cooler. I would just go with the converter that is in it, provided there is nothing wrong with it.

you will never stop automatic slippage.
its something you have to live with.
but the c6 is the best auto to have from factory.
you can bring them into the shop with burnt black oil and they'll still keep on truckin.
a Good cooler.(cross flow) will be just like puttin in a shift kit.

what's up? here are a few things you can have done for better and longer life for the trans. i have to agree with everyone on the trans. cooler, the cooler it runs the longer it will last especially if you live like in arizona. go with the raybestos blue plate kit, friction plates.these friction plates increase the torque capacity of your automatic transmission clutches and also increase their service life in severe-duty enviroment. another trick is to increase the friction plate and steel plate count in the direct drum and in the forward clutch (i'll double check on the forward clutch) increasing these steel's and friction's will let the trans shift much faster and firmer.depending on your year and application depends on how many frictions and steel's you can use, or you can buy aftermarket thru ford motorsport. the faster and more firmer you can get it to shift will make it last much longer than stock. when you get to the second gear band you should use a raybestos lined band for this application these are one of the best. another mod. you could add is on your intermediate servo and piston. if you have a stock trans. from the factory you probally have a letter "L" "N" "S" .. if you have one or maybe can find one try to use a letter "P" servo, this is a good performance upgrade for second & third gear app. if you want to do one better try to get a letter "D" or "G" lettered servo with the matching pistons these are bigger servo's that have a much bigger release area for quick, clean 2-3 shifts. i would recommend trying to see if you can find one of these "D" or "G" servo's they have an aluminum piston instead of the rubber piston of others and they seal much better with two O rings. if you find them look at the difference and judge for yourself. these work fantastic for me in my transmission. if i get more time i'll try to get back to ya with more info. later.....
