I've heard good and bad about hiboys. Are they a good truck? I sold my '64 and I'm looking at a hiboy. What do you think? The ones I've seen are really cool. Tell me what you think.

My friend has a '74 Hiboy, 4 inch susp. lift, 38" goodyear mud terrains. I like it, it's a great 4 wheeler.
The main diff. between the regular and the hiboy (as i understand it) is that the hiboy is taller and has a beefier suspension. some, I guess, came with the D-60 front.
Of course, I'd rather have a '34 Ford hiboy phaeton...

Nothing, and I mean nothing, stirs the soul, saying I'm a bad **** like lettin'em rip with a window shaking, fuel gulpin, carbon monoxide belchin, attention gettin, V-oh my LORD!-8!
The nickname "HiBoy" was given to the 3/4 ton Ford trucks made up to 1977 1/2. Because of the little extra suspension lift that they came with from the factory. They are a great truck as are all of the Ole Blue's(Ford). Alot of my friends swear by theirs, and they get alot of offroad and onroad use up here. I wouldnt hesitate getting one. Hope this helps.

HIBOY's are also the 1 ton 4x4's
there are differences between the hiboy and for instance a 77.5-79 3/4 or 1 ton
the leaf springs are the big difference.
and things like frame rail width in some places.
the mid mount fuel tank....
they have positive arc front leafs.

I love my Highboy. My dad bought it in '75 and I am the third owner. This truck "will take a lickin' and keep on tickin' (Sorry Timex)". My dad used the truck to carry a camper and a 18" fiberglass boat from Washington State to Alaska, back down to California, and then back to Washington (over the course of about 10 years). It has been a hunting rig, a wood cutting rig, and a fun rig.
I wouldn't have any other Ford truck. But, as far as a 4x4 vehicle, I don't think that it can be beat. Stock suspension can fit 35" tires easy. Also, some of the Highboys (all that I have seen) came with the Dana 6CF (a heavy duty Dana 44).
Sorry about rambling on, but I LOVE my truck. If you ask my fiance, she thinks that I love the truck more than her! (It's close )
I will warn you, they are hard on mileage and ride (pretty stiff).
I've never heard anything bad about the "Hi-Boys" (aka F-250s). The only down side as has been mentioned is a stiff ride, but thats what you get with any old, tough, 4x4 truck. Some people complain about the gas milage but you can get decent mileage if you set the engine up right. Let me conclude...I pulled two chevys and one dodge out of the mud the weekend before last, then made the uphill run they got stuck in...Ford "Hi-Boy" strikes again! I've had alot of trucks but this is the one I'm gonna keep. You won't regret it.

LAST EDITED ON 17-Jan-01 AT 03:17 PM (EST)[p]Does anyone know the 'true' spelling of the Ford Highboy? Before I came here, I always spelled it: Hi-boy. Then after being here a while, I saw that a lot of people spelled it: Highboy.
Does anyone know? Is this going to become another FE dispute?
I think for stock looks the hi-boy can't be beat. they sat 2-4 inches taller than any other 4x4, my 77 was so stock when I got it, it still had split rims with bias ply snows 8 ply. The thing rode like a tank, putting alum. rims and 33 inch radials on it smoothed out the ride a lot. gas mileage last time I checked was 12.5 with 400 c-6 4.10 gears. The best thing this winter was pulling my partners 2000 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 out of 2 snowdrifts. New chevs sit way too low!
There is no official spelling of Hi-Boy because its simply slang that has been assigned to the F-250s of the 67-77 era. Ford never used it. Over the years I have usually seen it spelled hi-boy, but hey, spell it any way ya want.

In my opinion the Hi-Boys are one tough truck! I particularly like the looks of the 67-72 years myself. The older 70's up to early 80's trucks have more of a truck feel to me. I plan on keeping my 70 around for years. New trucks just don't feel like a truck that much anymore. They drive more like cars! They are still nice though! Just not my preference...
Well, it won't be a popular opinion but here goes. I'd buy a '78-'79 f250, and that's coming from someone that has a '76 F250. The main reason is that you can get them with a high pinion Dana 60, and the power steering is much better. On top of that, lifts are easier to find, although if you only want 35's there's no need for a lift on a hiboy. Don't get me wrong, HiBoy style trucks are excellent, tough trucks. It's just that the later style has a few improvements. I would change the 78-79 grill for a '76-77 though.
I LOVE my 68 F250 highboy! It has No A/C, power steering, or power brakes, so my wife won't drive it and my SUV-driving friends don't ask to borrow it. It drives like a tank and is built as tough as one...
