I recently purchased a throttle body spacer for my 92 150 5.0 made be Helix out of JCWhitney and was wondering if anyone has experimented with these and if they really do help fuel economy or power (what range) the way they say it is supposed to or if anyone has any other feedback on it. My engine has about 8G on rebuild bored .040 over w/flat tops and headers and isnt a tired, oil burning block.
I believe the general consensus is that the spacers are a waste of cash. I searched on the subject a while ago, and never saw any evidence to show it to be effective.
They work better if you use 2, and then double them up, then install a tornado into the intake for full benifit of tb spacers.( Just kidding) The only engine that I have had any kind of benifit, was my 2002 jeep 2.5 4 cylinder, also added 4.0 tb at the same time, and it made for a decent inprovement. AEM also includes a tb spacer with thier jeep 2.5, and 4.0 cai kit, but not other cai's they sell. It was a real popular upgrade for the old carburated engines. Doesn't seem to do much on the modern fuel injected motors. There's exceptions to every rule, like a jeep inline motor, other than that, I hanen't heard anything good. I did put one on my 99 f-150, 5.4, but I also put on a cai, headers, catback, big bore tb,maf, and a crappy jet chip at the same time, so I can't say about the spacer by it's self.
Thats great skrappy, I am trying to make a mental list of the vehicles that people say the spacer's work on, because this question gets ask so much. Do you have an airaid, or another make? Don't be surprised if someone doesn't jump you on this post, and say it's all in your head, some people get real touchy about tb spacers for some reason. I had an 8 page post one time, with people calling me a liar, and full of bs, just because I said, a tb spacer worked on my jeep. A touchy subject at times!
Depending on the type of material they are made from is if they are worth it or not
If they are made from Phenolic resin, they are. Metal, no.
Phenolic Resin will prevent engine block heat from soaking into the intake manifold as well. and as everyone knows, Colder air = more air = more power. It also will change your HP/TQ curve slightly by increasing running lenght. I belive www.outlawengineering.com is the best source for them, but they don't make them for trucks yet
i had one on my 99 Z71, with airaid...it made a loud turbo sound from the air spinnin...i dunno better throttle response..1 mpg gained...as far as power no idea cant tell
From my personal observations, and hearing from others, there are some benifits on some applications, and some there are not. Some will say that there can't be any benifit, and then start spouting some scientific mumbo gumbo, screw that. I have found that I can feel a difference on some vehicles, and some you can't, it's that simple. I supose it could inhance the effect of some cai's, or larger tb's as a power package, but it would take some experimenting , and a dyno. Like I say, AEM includes them with some of thier cai kits, so they do the work for you.
I kwew this crap would start, your allways gonna get the know it alls that tell people that have used a product, that there crazy, it's all in there head, and it doesn't work. Then I wished it would have worked in my head on all the vehicles that I have tried them on. Not to be rude, Iv'e used them, some times you feel something, and some times you don't, depends on application, and maybe other factors, don;t know. Had this debate toooo many times, not going there again. Use, or don't use what you want. I'll give you this, your not going to see anythig earth shattering out of a spacer, if anything at all. Only luck that Iv'e have had, has been on a jeep, and on the jeep forums, there are plenty of others as well, a noted, and proven jeep inline upgrade. Now, I am done with this subject for awhile. I respect all opions, I AM JUST BURNT OUT ON THIS SUBJECT, sorry if I seem harsh, I don't mean to be. I am sure others will post thier experiences, good, or bad, and the debate will rage on.
The simple fact is that what ever swirling effect is negated when that "swirled air" enters the the intake runners.
Whatever gains might be percived are placebo on almost every modern FI vehicle.
Unless you are running a carb, there's no point in a TB spacer on almost every FI vehicle.
News flash for ya. They don't do ANYTHING for "swirled air" or any of that. What they do is prevent the TB's heat and Head's heat from soaking into the intake manifold. It also increases runner length.
Now you ask, why is my TB hot? well, there are 2 coolant lines running in it. Your TB requires it to be hot to work proporly. I think its pretty obvious why your heads are hot. Thermo spaces prevent the heat from soaking into the intake manifold.
Now your going to ask "oh longer runnings don't do anything wtf are you smoking" Well, they do. Longer runnings = more horsepower less torque. Shorter runners = more torque less horsepower. This has been dyno proven over and over again with custom intake manifolds

I have dyno sheets of them working.... I can PROVE they work. I stand behind them 100% when done correctly
Thank you, I get so tired of people telling me, that it is all in my head, Iv'e used them with some success, even on some fords, but didn't want to go into detail, because of the the debate, and name calling that insue's. Been down that road to many times. Can you post your dyno sheets when the bad mouthing starts?, as I'm sure it will.

Correct. The swirling air has no say in a modern fuel injected motor. I had one a few years ago on a truck, and it was a complete waste of money. No power was gained, and it made a very annoying whirring sound when you accelerated from the air going past it.
