I've got a '97 Ranger 2.3 that's been running a little rough lately. It's also due for it's [Massachusetts] inspection sticker this month. I'm headed back to school at the end of this week, and would really like to get both taken care of before I go.
My initial plan of attack on the rough running is to clean the MAF, but my understanding is that I also need to reset the computer after I clean it. I remember a few years ago, my aunt failed an inspection because the CEL had been reset by a mechanic the day before (I'm pretty sure he didn't fix anything, but just reset the light so it wouldn't be on for the inspection.)
Would disconnecting the battery be recorded by the OBD system?
I'm hesitant to try to get it inspected while it's running poorly, after 221k, I suspect it will need all the help it can get to pass emissions.
I'd do a full tuneup, unless you did one just recently, that will help. A code can pop without a CEL coming on, so go to Autozone or the like and get the codes pulled, if there are any start working through them. Should be runnin' fine by inspection time.
No idea...I don't get my shocks from there. Wouldn't suprise me if they were totally wrong though, you know how that goes.
Perhaps rent a code scanner from them if you don't trust them to do it right. Or look for an older gentlemen working there who might actually know what he's talking about.
Anytime that the codes are cleared or a battery is disconnected, your OBD-II Ford has to complete several drive cycles before all the emissions system montors are in a proper state of "readiness".
