May be a bit conservative, but I have my transmission serviced (flush and refill) every 30k. Seems like a small price to pay to help extend the life of a very expensive and important component of our trucks.
Seems problems start to develop around 75-100k if no maintenance is performed.

I've got the 4R75W transmission, which specifies Mercon V.

Its fairly expensive. Ford does it for ~ 100 to 160 bucks.
I'd rather do it myself, but since I don't have a flush machine, a simple 'driveway' drain and refill only changes out about 1/2 of the fluid or less.
If you decide to have it done be sure they put in the right type of tranny fluid for your application. Mercon, Mercon V, Type F, etc.

Here's a link for the Diy'er crowd.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...nsmission.html

Granted it is based on the previous model F150, but the article will still apply.

I dont know about in your area but around Philly On a radio announcement I heard that Amoco was offering Transmission flush for your vehicle @99.00 and it was for the lifetime of your vehicle. For that Price its a good dEAL...my Bud owns a shop and charges around 125 for the service ( Including Fluid). Should be worth considering if you dont have an extended warranty and/or you do alot of towing/hauling.

What ever you do, make sure the shop uses a Mercon V fluid. Don't fall for the "We add an additive" crap either.

Pay little now or a lot later.

I am a bit weird on this one...i worked in a transmission shop back in the late '90's, and we did a lot of Ford vehicles, especally with the E4OD. We always recomended changing the fluid and filter every 15K miles or once a year witch ever comes first. Since then i have bought a '05 Lariat 4x4 and i am coming up on 10K miles and i fully intend to change my tranny fluid and filter at the next service, with full synthetic in both Diff's tranny and engine. Then again the Ford engineers that came up with the service plan most likley know more about the tranny than i do. with that said, it is not going to hurt the tranny to change the fluid and filter early. Oh and by the way...if the Dealer/tranny shop/mechanic comes to you with your tranny pan and says you need a new tranny cuz of a light coating of metal shavings in the pan he is feeding you a line. all automatics have a light coating of metal and clutch fiber in the pan. if you put your finger into the pan, when you remove it you should see the metal of the pan where your finger was. the tranny fluid should be a pretty pink color too. Oh and if your tranny has never been serviced and you have more than about 75K on it don't do it, i have seen tranny's go belly up after that. of cousre i could be wrong. much of my information is going on a decade old...hope it helps.

there is no filters in these trannies only screens. the screens don't need changing and the gasket is resuable.

They added an additive to mine to "make it" Mercon V.....Is this not good?

synthetic tranny fluid

I personally use amsoil synthetic tranny fluid in all my tractors and trucks.
I like the extra protection and I think it surpasses fords standards.

I rather get it done at the dealership. As far as oil changes and other lube changes, I rather have them have the record of me getting it done.
