does anyone know what the numbers on the intake manifold mean? My old man has a 390 with a C5AE on his and I got one at a swap meet that is a C4SE8425A not sure what it came off of I was told it was from a 64 Thunderbird triing to find out so that I can get a temp gage sending unit for it.
all temp. guage sending units are the same size for all the FE motors... some have a different temp range based upon the dash cluster electronics... they have different colored stripes around the unit just above the threads...
If it will help you any, I just checked the intake casting number on my 64 tbird is C4SE9425A. Almost the same as your number. maybe the 9 was an 8? covered with some crud... It has a Ford 4 barrel on it. The temp sending unit did look small on it, like under 1/2"
The "SE" in the part number is a Tbird application as mentioned. "S" was also used for Tbird parts me thinks. It should also have the same angled carb pad as any other FE intake. Ford used a wedge shaped carb spacer to compensate for the angle on the intake when installed in the Tbird. If the spacer came with the intake you can get $50+ for it. There should be a date code by the thermostat inlet. If it's a 64 or so it's a lowriser casting. Should be comparable to your Dad's C5.

9425 is for 427 high Riser manifolds and this isn't one.

im going to have to disagree, my intake is C4SE9425A and i know for a fact it is not a high riser manifold. and i know for a fact that it is a 390. and i dont think a high riser manifold would work good on D2TE-AA heads.
I've had 2 different 4bbl intakes, C6AE 9425 G (got it from ford390gashog) and C8AE 9425. The C8 intake is off a 68 390 S Code motor that I'm running right now. Its the original intake also. Not trying to start anything...just trying to help.
C and 8 are the year 1968. A or S is Vehicle type (A=galaxie or S= tbird) E is the "engine part" designation. The 9425 is for intake manifold p/n.

I have two myself, I haven't researched them any so I don't have any info on them. One is a C2AE9425C and the PO said it was off a T-Bird. The other is a C6AE9425G and it's supposed to be off of a 410 Mercury.
I've also seen and had aluminum intakes with both 9424 and 9425 numbers. Ford still uses both 9424 and 9425 part numbers on their intakes today. I remember the 9425 being a mainfold-intake and 9424 a manifold assy-intake. The differnece being the assy having the water bypass tube and some coreplugs. I'm not so sure tho....
You want to buy a temp. sending unit eh? I think that you should get the sender that is required for your vehicle originally or the unit your temp. guage requires. It's hot or it's not right? Water is water. You might have to use NPT fittings to adapt the sender to your manifold, but it will give the correct temp. reading on your guage regardless because it is the correct equipment for the guage yur using. I hope I helped you a little. I wish that I could tell you what sender came originally on your manifold but I can't. But unless it's going back into the same year, make, and model then you end up opening a can of worms on the whole thing. Go with the sender that works with what you got then make it fit your manifold. B-)
