i posted in oil aqnd lubrication with no response, i guess this is more 4x4 related
i dont think many guys in here run hydro assist, but i figured id ask anyway
i run a chevy style saginaw pump, 79 f-250 box, and a 1.5" bore 8" stroke hydraulic ram at the axle, and a large sized cooler for the fluid in my ford with 44" tires
what fluid would yall reccomend running? type f tranny fluid? power steering fluid, hydraulic fluid?
thanks guys
i run mercon III now and it seems to thin and foams, im thinking of type f tranny fluid or regular hydraulic fluid, whats the differences in those???
well I am running a Ford C2 pump and a 1.5x8" ram... but im just using the same stuff they put in at the factory, I think its Type-F, Mercon III, or M2C138-CJ. It doesnt foam, but I havent wheeled it hard yet. Also, I have a lot of fluid in my system... I have a filter and a tranny cooler for it, along with the stock cooler lines on the engine crossmember...

I got min at autozone. its for a chevy, either 70's or 80's cant remember. it was $20, and its called a "Filtran". When I replace this one Im going to get one that is built for a tractor that is a screw-on top-feeder filter. The best thing would be one of those, or an aluminum tranny filter that has the cooling ribs on it. I thinkIvan has one of them on his transmission, or maybe his Hydro
Filter:
Tranny Cooler:
Edit: although my pump does have increased flow over a stock ford's... I bored out the port to 1/16 over whatever stock was, cant remember. I guess Im not a credible source for foaming, I dont have giant tires and havent wheeled it hard since hydro was added.

That's the same filter I'm running. I just use regular PS fluid. I had some issues with cavitation at high RPM's which seems to be creating foam in mine too. It will 'boil over' but the fluid isn't actually hot. Once I get the engine in there I'll have to test somethings out. I have a new pump in there now.
Seeing how my truck has no rear axle at the moment, I wont be able to go rough on the steering to see if it foams. but when I wheel it hard, Im sure it will. You have a cooler too dont you Ivan?
weve had problems with the fluid in the forklifts foaming out of the res on hot days, and we have 55 gallon drums of summit full synthetic fluid for the presses, flushed it out and ran that and no problems now.
Loosing steering due to your pump cavitating sucks, ask me how I know. I had some troubles with it bubbling over when I installed a cooler. Removed the cooler and it went away. Never figured that one out since the cooler was unobstructed. I have a totally different setup now to play with but haven't installed it yet. We'll see...
