Synthetic Punch Out

Gentlemen,

Since I am a user of synthetic oils, I can talk. I also know I will be punched out for these thoughts.

But really, when dino oils are awesome which they truly are, why do we spend so much on synthetics? Do we even know if they are better? More expensive doesn't equate with higher quality. My brother pushes his Mercedes way more than I my Ford.

The only engine wear I have ever seen were caused by poor engineering or metallurgy. There is almost zero wear in a reasonably maintained engine. Think about it, has anyone ever seen a worn out engine? We get rid of our cars when the dashboard rattle becomes intolerable. Right? Gasket leaks don't count.

I honestly believe (with a crankcase full of synthetic in 2 cars) that the extra money should be spent on radiator hoses more often, which do kill engines.

Ken

I do exclude you guys in very cold climates where synthetics have a great advantage.

I had a discussion with another guy about this many years ago and then I asked the question "Why do most guys stick with (and DEMAND) a certain brand of engine oil, but when it comes to tranny fluid, nobody really cares what brand goes in it?" Now I know there are exceptions to the rule and I'm sure a bunch of posters will now jump in and say "I always put brand X in my tranny because......", but when you think about it a rebuilt tranny costs about as much or in some cases MORE than a rebuilt engine, but as long as you use the oil with the proper spec, most people don't care about the brand.

BTW, I use synthetic engine oil during the winter because my work vehicle sits outside and it can get plenty cold here. In the summer, I'll put in about anything. I also have an '88 Cougar that has 300K+ miles on it and it's had about every kind of dyno and synthetic branded oil there is. I just put in whatever is on sale I guess. But I think you are right. Dyno oil is now pretty awesome.

i'm lazy anymore and hate to have hot engine oil from a filter running down my arm soooooo fewer changes is a good thing, Mobil 1 is good to go for 10k miles plus in the Aero 4L low rpm engine, no problemo....as long as engine PCM and sensors are doing their job and there is no fuel dilution.....
I pull some steep Hwy 101 coastal mountains and into the Canadian Rockys with a trailer and van loaded to the gills, so run Mobil 1 Mercon ATF to sustain the higher tranny temps and will run twice the miles

Also, the old girl is relegated to the outside now, no room in the inn for her anymore, so she sets in the winter cold....full PAO/ester syn. helps the winter starts
she gets a diet of 3 1/2 qts M1 5w20 and 1 qt of RL 0w30 along with 16 oz of Valvoline Engine Oil Treament loaded with extra soluble moly, ZDDP and calcium that the EPA says we can't have anymore in our SM rated oils because our vehicles might urinate contaminates in the enviroment....
Isn't the EPA big brother wonderful, they order that we can no longer have real pure 100% gasoline, but must now buy their taxpayer subsidized corn liquor cocktail that has 20% less power in the winter time and can eat up the fuel system

Well, for me, I need oils that hold up to 15,000 miles or more guaranteed, otherwise I'd be changeing dino oil 4 or 5 times a year, but only twice with high grade synthetics.. I believe in haveing the best tranny fluid possible, since heat destroys transmissions by destroying the fluid. Use better fluid, you get better protection from the effects of heat. I am not impressed with dino oils. They just can't withstand normal loads for more than about 9,000 miles at best. We do see worn out engines, because what most of you guys call high mileage is easy throwing distance for me. I can wear out a new cars warranty in one year.

I use syntetic only. If there is mineral oil in pan, it is very difficult to start the engine if it is cold outdoors!
