Hey all you motorheads. Does anyone know if there were any block changes made over the years for the 300? Specifically, I have a '93 with a 300. When it comes time to rebuild another block to drop into it, are there any year blocks I would want to stay away from? It would really be irritating to rebuild a block only to discover I couldn't drop it into my truck and have everything bolt up.
I have no experience with the later model 300's, but ran into a little trouble with 302's. Older 302's ('79 & back) have a boss cast onto the block for the mechanical clutch linkage cross-bar. Newer 302's have a "juice" clutch, and the boss was removed since it is no longer needed. To put a later 302 in an earlier stick truck, it requires a bracket (Ford used one on a '77 F100 with a 302) either stock or fabricated. Remember, 302's and 300's have the same bellhousing, so it wouldn't suprise me if the boss was removed on the 300's as well. Of course, this is no problem if you are running a "no hands" (automatic) trans.
Other that that, I suggest keeping the pistons, rods, crank, dampener and flexplate as a group in case Ford changed the balancing. Mixing different parts without re-balancing creates some nasty vibes - I got burned on a 330MD FT engine in a F600.
Don't you still have that "leaning tower of power" six in a Ford?

Yeah I've still got the truck that had the slant six, but as with all good things the engine/trans went to slant six heaven, and it's now powered with a 351M and an FMX, which is also on it's way to BB heaven in favor of a 300 and a 4 speed. But the orinial question is for it's replacement a '93 F250 with (are you ready for this?) a factory 300 with a MAZDA 5 speed. I'm trying to figure out a way to retrofit a 3 speed behind the 5 speed to give me a compound low. That M 5spd has absolutely NO bottom end.
Theoretically then I should be able to use an older engine block in the newer truck, right?
