Sorry guys, so many questions, so little time. I notice yesterday that when I go to pass (heavy acceleration) after cruising on the freeway for extended periods, my ex will let out a moderate amount of black smoke for about 5 sec. Once it clears it wont do it again until I drive for another extended period on cruise control. Is the engine loading up? Is this normal? This is my first diesel and I have the habit of picking apart my vehicles. It still runs great no problems. It does not have a chip and its completely stock. Will the 05e15 recall cure this as well as the start up smoke?

Smoke under hard exceleration os normal. My 2003 Excursion sdoes it to and re-flashing does not prevent it. Black smoke is unburned fuel, carbon and soot blowing through the system. When you first step on it, it billows out and disappears as your motor, speed and RPM's all catch back up to each other.
Ever seen a semi truck start out from a stop and under hard exceleration the thick black smoke? Your truck is the same... and when the semi gets up to speed or the driver starts off in a less aggressive nature, no smoke.
Enjoy it and use it to lay down a smoke screen when passing motorists you pass and do not like!!! Stink them out anyway!!!
i have to disagree black smoke is not normal for your truck. i agree its unburned fuel and u should be burning all the fuel injected into cyl. being a stock no mod. truck. some trucks with mods smoke the great gale banks stated black smoke is no good
I have a bone stock 05 that will let out a healthy amount of smoke when under heavy acceleration. I think that it is normal. When I'm not accelerating hard it doesn't smoke at all.
It runs way too good to bring it in for the recall.
my 03 was doing smoke thing under hard acceleration too. when i took it in for the latest recall on thurs. i mentioned it to the service manager. He said that this recall was clearing up several things but to keep a eye on it and let him know if it still did it. So far it hasnt done it anymore on my truck.
It is normal for a diesel to let out a bit of black smoke during hard acceleration. A diesel does not adjust timing per rpm it is in a fixed position, so when you step down you are throwing more fuel but not advancing the timing to burn it, such as with a gas engine and ignition system.
