Hey, I'm having a problem with my headers and the clutch rod on my 1978 351 F150 4x4. With the headers in the clutch rod wont move far enough to fully disengage. I tried bending the headers some but it doesn't work.
Another thing, with the 4-speed manual trans. in third gear it rattles like crazy. If i hit the right rpm it pops out! Is this the throwout bearing? HELP!
Trever, just get rid of the manual shift tranny, and put in a C6. Any fullsize 23 year old truck with a big ol V8 in it should be able to shift it's on tranny. :-)

How hard is the manual to auto conversion? I have a 360, NP435 tranny and NP205 t-case. I imagine the 360 will bolt up just fine to the C-6, but what about the t-case?
If the NP435 kicks out of gear, I think the gears are bad inside. The throw out bearing won't do this. I bought a used tranny for my car once and it would kick out of 2nd when you drop speed.
I don't know about the headers, but I had a set where I had to bend a tab on the shifter and another set where I had to bang one header pipe to clear a carb.
Matt, It is much easier to go in that direction than the other. You'll need the steering column, shifting linkages, kickdown, flexplate, tranny, and driveshaft.
You'll have to remove existing, driveshaft, tranny, bell, clutch assembly, flywheel, pilot bearing, clutch linkages and pedal, steering column etc.
A little insite. ;-)

REAL men bang through their own gears. You'd never get me to give up any horse and torque for a slush auto. Yup, your gears might be bad, or check your linkages and make sure they are fully shifting it into gear in the first place. Sometimes if your linkages aren't adjusted they won't kick it fully into gear and it will pop back out.
If your knuckles ain't bleeding you did something wrong.

Automatic is cheese...... real men grind gears!! If your NP435 is popping out of gear check the linkage and then replace the trans with another NP435 if it does end up being the source of the problem. They're rugged units and they look wild with the shift lever that comes up to the height of the steering column!
Crawl under their and have somebody shift it (yes, that would be WITHOUT the truck running), and watch to see how far the linkage moves the tabs on the box...if it only moves them a little bit adjust the linkage until you get a firm shift.

I just had mine NP435 rebuilt it was doing similar things it needed bearings and there is a plastic guide clip that can raise hell with proper shifting I think its worth keeping and worth the money to have it done rather than buy another used "problem"
sounds like you should have paid a few extra dollars and bought a set of L&L headers they are specifically made for your truck with no bolt up problems.
twags6- what brand of headers are you trying? Some brands fit much better than others. Stan's and Sandersons seem to be very well thought of, John has hookers and from his comments I certainly would not try that brand. DF
Am I barkin up the wrong tree or does the NP435 have an integral tower shifter out of the top of the case? Some of you guys are refering to the shiftlinkages and tabs on the side of the tranny. I thought the NP435 was like my T18 (or my T-5) with the shifter going directly into the top of the tranny? I had a tranny shop test drive my T18 and they wanted to replace the shifter, saying mine was sloppy and would eventually have the truck comeing out of gear. I haven't looked yet bet I've heard theres a role pin in the shifter tower that wears out. Perhaps you can get creative with the clutch linkages or even figure out a retrofit for going to a hydraulic clutch or cable clutch. I saw a Mustang mag that featured a guy in SanDiego that makes a hydraulic clutch retrofit for putting T5's in old Mustangs and ditching the rod linkage setup (very similar to the truck setup).
I think I have to agree with BBT, if it's a 4 speed TRUCK tranny it should have the shifter coming out of the top of the trans and not have any linkages. The only thing that should be capable of being adjusted on this rig is the clutch.
It sounds like a simple case of a worn trans to me.
I assume since everyone is talking about the NP435 tranny, thats whats in the truck. If the gears are worn, is it worth having them fixed or should i get a new tranny?
