Ratio?

Hello all. I got a question concerning the mix ratio of acytelene and oxygen for my gas welding and cutting torch. What is the proper ratio? or do you just wing it and try to get a pretty flame lol. Considering im a beginner i would really appreciate your advice.thanks.

Books about welding will have pictures of the different types of flames. Like the ones on these pages but better:

A good starting point is 5 psi acetelyene and 10 psi oxygen.
turn on the acetylene at the torch just a crack and light it. Open the valve until you get a fair sized flame (experience is best for this)
then slowly open the oxygen . You'll see two blue cones within an orange flame. Open the oxygen until the two cones *just* come together. This is a neutral flame that you use for about 99% of gas welding.
You'll be very frustrated trying to teach yourself, so get someone to show you how, or take a course.

NEVER NEVER NEVER go above 15 psi. on your acetylene. as it is unstable at 18psi. this is why it is disolved in acetone in the bottle.

Check the booklet that came with the torch, my Turbo-Tote uses different pressures than my Smith Equipment. Also never light off acetylene alone. open oxygen and adjust the regulator, close handle valve, and repeat with acetylene. Open torch oxygen valve then the acetylene valve, and light off torch. If you light off just acetylene you will get soot, and you can get a lot of health problems from this. Also the torch may pop on acetylene only light off and you will carbon up the inside of the torch tip and shorten its life. If you are using the torch for service work, IE HVAC work always, check the rig and do a test light off out side the building.

good base numbers are 5 and 25. usually with most regs, you need to set the closed acetylene pressure to 7, as it will drop when you open it. oxygen is usually ok. when you light it, using only acetylene turn it up until the flame is "clean", and you can see almost no smoke. then, add accetylene until you get 6 sharp separate cones, then hit your oxygen jet handle, and readjust until you get the 6 sharp cones again. preheat without hitting the handle, once its molten, hit the handle and go.
