Propane torch and brazing?

I have a small propane torch for small jobs, (heating a seized bolt to get it out ext) but what I was wondering is does a propane torch produce enough heat to braze. I know how to arc weld and I am thinking about practicing/teaching myself how to braze and I am wondering if I need to go out and buy a better torch kit.

A handheld propane torch cannot produce enough heat to braze. to braze the steel must be hotenough that it turns orange to red and you will; not be able to do this with a small propane torch. get yourself a good oxygen/acetylene torch that way you can use it for a cutting torch or to braze

Can anyone suggest a good brand or torch setup then, I'm a college student so I am on a budget. I want something decent quality (not nessecarilly top of the line) at a reasonable price.

Propane would probably produce enough heat if you could add oxygen. By itself, no. There are some smaller rigs that have mapp and oxygen, or propane and oxygen I think. Or maybe you can rent an Oxy/acetylene rig.

mapp gas is an alternative. burns much hotter than propane and is made w/aceltelene.you can still use your propane tip and is sold in similar cylinder for about 8 bucks a pop.

Your original question....

It all really depends on what you'd like to braze, the torch tip size vs quantity of gas you're flowing, how much oxygen you're adding, etc.

You could buy a Turbo Torch with tips for Propane and Mapp, or a full blown cutting/brazing torch set-up.

A lot of junk yards cut with a Propane/Oxygen mix.

The larger the parts, the bigger and hotter flame you'll need ( just like thinner metal, less current..... )

I use a KT, I know import, but it works good, and parts are available.

Oxy-acetelyne is the only way to fly. other methods will leave you frustrated, which takes away the good feeling of a perfect joint. Besides, you can cut and weld too. A refrigeration service set is portable and big enough for most jobs. Unfortunately probably about 350.00 complete. Nice to have two sets of bottles. 2-MC tanks and 2 R tanks.
