Once in a while I have the same problem, but I have a new CPS in it. Mine is a 97 too. Mine only does it cold. No idea what it is.

just a quick thought. maybe you are having trouble with your ebpv sticking. It closes when the engine is first started and cold. Maybe it isnt opening right back up. Just a thought maybe it will help. Let us know. good luck

edit: ebpv = exhaust back pressure valve

When you say "no throttle",do you mean the idle doesn't change when you step on the pedal? Could be the IVS on your pedal assy not working. Can't rem. the switch either makes or breaks when you step on the pedal so the PCM will respond to changes in TPS voltage and not just idle.

thanks for the responses guys. how do i check the ebpv and where is it? brian, after it starts it stays at a idle, no matter what you do to the pedal, i tried slowly pushing it down, push it down fast doesnt seem to matter. even try jarring it thinking it was maybe a bad connection at the pedal. still nothing. it just seems to start working when it feels like it. luckily its only after start up and is only annoying for now. just worried it might do it at a stop light or something. by the way i do have the 10k mod on it but i dont think that could be it. ive never read any other complaints related to that..thanks

Sounds like the pedal assembly(IVS) is bad.... I've heard of a few going bad, mainly 99+powerstrokes though.

I'd guess TPS (throttle position sensor) It's easily changed if you can get one. My 96 you have to buy the whole pedal assembly. Not cheap.

Hey Risky, You should hear the switch "clicking" when you move the pedal from the idle pos. and BACK.Make sure you hear it when going from idle pos. & when returning to idle pos.The switch is on the side of the throttle assy. You can bend the tab to adj. so it depresses the switch at idle.If it already does and you can hear it clicking, then the contacts in the switch must be bad.

I too have this same problem. After starting the engine it will just idle, nothing else. It has been doing this from time to time for a couple yrs, has not gotten any worse, sometimes goes away and is not problem for a month or longer. And other times a couple times a day. To "wake" the truck up I pump the fuel peddle, most times it will take after 6-8 quick pumps. I have come to the conclusion from this site that there is something wrong with the peddle assembly but I understand it is high$$$$. I have seen some on the internet bay site,

If the throttle position sensor, or the ebpv is bad will they show up as a trouble codes?
If not, how can I tell if they are bad?
Also what is the cost of the pedal assembly, and what does it take to put it in?

I don't think the ebpv will set a code - not sure.Mine is gutted & disconnected-haven't seen a CEL.When my IVS was screwing up I'd get a CEL & OD light, trans in "fault mode" w/high line press.-hard shifts. This would all reset on a restart. The pedal assy. is an easy swap.Didn't have to change mine, but the prices I've seen are pretty high.

I don't think my trans will not go into fault mode. I have an electronic systems eliminator in it. And I always have hard shifts. I had it built that way. I will find a way to check the codes. What does the IVS and the ebpv look like and where are they. Sorry for the dumb questions. I know a good bit about IDIs, because of this site, but the PSDs are new to me. Thank you.

The pedal assembly for my '99 is held down with three bolts. The sender and the IVS switch are both mounted on the whole assembly with a wiring harness coming off of it. These engines are fly by wire - no throttle cable. Look under your dashboard, you'll see what I mean.
