Can anyone tell me exactly where the oil dipstick is supposed to be on a 390? The one I'm working on currently has it installed in the oil pan. I purchased a new pan and it does not have a dipstick tube in it. So I'm assuming that it was originally installed somewhere else. Any help would be appreicated.
Maybe someone can post a photo. Anyhow, it goes through the block under the number five cylinder if I recall correctly. The dipstick tube is held in place by attaching it to the first exhaust manifold bolt on the left side.

no. the hole is to the right of the oil filter adapter. not on the front of the block. sounds like this engine came from a 4x4. you won't be able to install a dipstick in the block unless you remove the plug.
Use a 1/8" or smaller drill bit and drill the plug until you just start to go thru, screw in a sheetmetal screw and pull out with a slide hammer or use vise grips and bang on the vice grips.
