problems starting
Chas
When it starts hard, does it act flooded? Do you have to hold that gas down to get it to start? If so, then that carb is getting too hot and perculating (flooding it), my 390 did this and I had to get a plastic 1" carb spacer to keep the carb cooler - it worked.
If your sure it's not flooding, then it must be in the starter circuit. My starter recently had to be replaced for the same reason, slow starts when hot. Look over the cables. Are the cables in good condition? Any cracks, corrosion, loose connections, exposed wire? Good clean connections on battery, good ground wire with clean connections. Any one of these things would make it start hard, look it over and let us know what you find.
It is also possible that you got a bad starter, it happens more than you think.

Also could be the too much timing advance. Check both the mechanical advance weights as well as the vacuum advance, make sure they aren't stuck. Also could be the static timing set too much advance.
Good luck.
