Engine identification

Hey ya'll,
I recently got hold of a 74 ford truck. great truck, but here's my problems:

the motor isnt original, the guy who sold it to me said he got it from a 70 merc, went to autozone for tune up parts, and they are saying that there wasnt a 70 400 anything. I know that autozone isnt the end all be all authority on what vehicles had what engines, but it kinda makes me nervous. how do I identify the motor for sure?

and my next question is with a 'stock'? 2bbl what is the best upgrade to a 400 that is I presume stock?

any help will be greatly appreciated, I am anxious to find out so I can get rolling on this beast in the making.

jeff

Engine identification

Where does the thermostat bolt to it, is on the block or on the end of the intake manifold. Also is there any ID stickers left on the motor and see if you can find any casting #'s on the block or the heads. There is alot of help on this board if they have some #'s to go by. Greg NE
