I don't know the brand of your gauges, but mine are Autometer. My pyro has a key-on power lead. Crusied to the Rx store 'bout 2 mi. down the road, let it idle wait'in for the wife, egt's were stable at 235-240. Just a tap on the go pedal got it above 450* real quick, then it trickled back down. When I turn off the key, needle drops to just below 0. Lie-O-Meter outside temp (here in Houston) is 81*.
Maybe your gauge has a sticky spot at the 100 mark. Is the movement smooth while operating??
long and boring engineering data about thermocouples and 20 micro amp indicator meters: 1) thermocouples come in various "flavors" based upon where they will be installed measuring what level of temps. some are really accurate at room temp, but top out at about 350 degrees, others are good for about 1750 degrees, but are practicaly worthless at room temp. Guess which style you have. You are making a reference voltage of about .1280 volts which increases slowly until about 350 then ratchets up on a predictable basis. There are compensation devices available but they require external voltages to be applied in a subtraction mode and these voltages tend to make the device slightly more inaccurate. 2) the meter has been manufactured to be more accurate at high temps also, since that is where you are looking to avoid the most damage to the engine. Good news: how to tell if your system is accurate (which it probably is) take the probe out and immerse in a pot of boiling water. meter should read about 212 more or less depending on altitude and pressure difference. Betcha the stupid thing reads accurate there since it is a known calibration point that is really easy to get to. if it aint accurate a small 10 ohm potientometer installed in series with the meter and probe can be used to recalibrate. Don't be suprised if you only need 1 ohm to fix the accuracy. Qualifications: electro mechanical tech Phillips laboratory (Rocket site) Edwards AFB, space shuttle booster program. BAD news: If you want accuracy, you need a digital voltmeter like a fluke with a thermo probe of the right type and the look up table to check the output for temp. or Buy the blody expensive fluke with the probe and the conversion process installed.
