Trans code not in decoder

My 93 prospect went to a higher bidder. Looking now at an 89 F150 4x4 Super Cab 5.0L 4-speed 3.55 axles. Tag says trans is an "F" code. What is that? Also the shifter just moves all around everywhere. Owner says it needs a plastic bushing of some sort. If someone knows what that is, how involved in replacing it?

An F code 4 speed trans, as listed in my books, is a Borg-Warner T-18 4 speed manual trans.
I don't see a bushing in the diagram of the topend, so I can't help there.
I'm guessing you're going to have to drop the trans to fix it anyway. I'd pop off the top and make sure the shift lever assy is in the right place, and check the shift fork position. I've had the shift lever pop out of the shift gates before. trans was stuck in neutral regardless of shifter position.
Hope this helps out some.

after looking further it looks like you should be able to access the top cover without dropping the trans first.

1) open door and cover seat
2) remove 4 screws holding floor mat
3) remove the 11 screws holding the access cover to the floor pan. Place shift lever in reverse position and remove the cover.
4) remove the insulator and cover
5)Remove the transfer case shift lever, shift ball, and boot as an assembly.
6) Remove transmission shift lever, shift ball and boot as an assembly.

These are the first 6 steps to removing the trans as well.

Thanks for that info! I was hoping I could go through the floor to access the problem. I'm not familiar with the B-W T-18, have heard of it. Is it a good trans, aside from it not having an overdrive? Did you have an exploded view of one?

The one I had seemed to ba a good trans. Other than the shift lever popping out of the shift gates there was no other problem. The problem I had with the shifter was because my brother was hot rodding it and tried to speed-shift it when the problem occured.
Unfortunately I don't have a scanner to scan the photos in my shop manual for you. you might try a google search for the trans and see what comes up.

The T-18 tranny is bulletproof. That granny gear is amazing. You won't go wrong with it, other than you won't have an overdrive gear.

Not having the overdrive is a main concern, that and the fact that the shifter seems like it's going out the passenger window. Never seen anything like it....... 3.55's with no O-D might be painful in the wallet.

What transfer case is likely to be hooked to this T-18, a NP208 or BW13-45?

The only 2 transfer cases listed in my books for the 89 F150 4X4 are both Borg-Warners. the 13-56 manual shift, and the 1345.
