head upgrade...when?

When were the heads redesigned to help alleviate the plug blowout problem? I have a 2000 and am wondering if I have the improved design or the old one? I'm at 96k and am beginning to worry about this issue.

Don't change your sparkplugs and you won't have a problem. I have/had 190k on mine until the same plug blew twice, the second time it took the helicoil with it. Now it's in the shop getting a used 2001 engine put in.

leaving them in to long will seal there fate. i have yet to see one truck in our fleet of 75 trucks blow a plug with proper maintance. the plugs get torqued every 50k and replaced at 100k. none have issues. the 3 trucks bought at auction from a closed company all had issues with blowouts. those 3 are now parts trucks sitting in the back lot.

Yeah, I thought I heard something about the 2001 and up models being better about not blowing the plugs. Something about there being more threads used on the spark plug. I have also heard others say that one of the ford plants is where the bad heads came from. The mechanic I heard this from told me that a state fleet of fords bought from the bad plant had about 80% of their trucks blow a plug, and then another fleet in the southern part of the state had a fleet of fords, and not a single one of theirs blew a plug. From what i've seen though, it is almost always is on the passenger side head when they blow.

Its the 2003 heads that are designed to stop the plug spitting problem.

Yea the '03 heads I beleive have 6 rows of threads to hold the plugs in, vs the 4 rows of threads in previous year models. I have 110k on my truck and changed plugs at 90k and have yet to have a problem.
