Newbie here and this forum is the best! I have a 98 Expy w 128k that needs a tranny fluid change. I have read the posts and i "think" I can do this myself but I am driving the truck from MA to FL in a few weeks and I am doing a bunch of maintenence so im not sitting on RT 95 outside of Darlington NC at 3:00 am. I just called cottman and they quoted me $75 bucks for full change and filter, dropping pan etc but not draining Torque converter. Said not nessessary cause of some chemical thas spreads out fluid thru entire system etc. Question is is... this seems awful inexpensive for 20+ qts of fluid, labor, filter etc. I would be better off taking it to them cause they can do it cheaper than DIY? Any feedback w/b great. Thanks in advance!
thanks for feedback....Im guessing that for 75$ cottmans drains pan only, replaces filter and refills pan. To me that seems useless cause there is another couple gallons of old fluid in the system. I got a quote at a local tranny shop of $150 im guessing they do it right so I think im gonna try it myself.
^I can't remember if all of them do, but my TC has a drain plug. You have to rotate the engine till it's facing down, but then you unscrew the plug and drain the TC.

wow what a rip! so they are charging you 75.00 for 4 quarts of fluid and a 13.00 filter. seems way to expensive.
not sure why you think they are using 20 quarts. its obvious they are only dropping the pan and refilling. there is no magical fluid in the TC as it uses the same atf from the same sump.
One more thing you might want to do while you are under there is change the fluid in your transfer case. It only take about 2 qts. of trans. fluid. Changed the fluid in mine and it eliminated a slight slippage I had when pulling away from a stop with a trailer.Biggest problem is getting the fluid in the fill hole. Not exactly enough room to tip up a bottle of fluid. As for draining the trans.and the torque converter, not a big deal.
