04 FX4 Scab - when I shift from drive to reverse it seems like it takes 1-2 seconds to actually engage so you can press the gas without slamming the gears. Is this normal for all these trucks. I don't notice any other tranny issues when shifting into drive. Shifts are nice and firm at WOT. Any thoughts?? Am I just paranoid.
Mine is the same way, 04 Scab. When you shift into reverse, it seems to take a moment for the transmission to get the idea. Along with the slow to react fly by wire throttle, I usually find the engine rpms going up before the trans slams into gear. Normally I would say that that behavior isn't good for the long term life of the tranny. But what do I know, Ford seems to have all the answers.
I do have a bad habit, which is killer on my tranny... I will confess, HOWEVER please keep in mind that I plan on keeping this truck until the wheels fall off, so I am only hurting myself...
When I am in reverse, and nearly stopped (but not quite) I go ahead and pull it down into drive. I do wait, however, for the tranny to engage before I accelerate.
My dad used to do that in his old cars when I was younger, and I just picked it up.
Sorry.
But I think the lag in the tranny *may* actually save my tranny a little bit....
I have had a 2000 Ford Explorer, 2002 Ford Explorer, and a 2002 Ford Ranger. They all had a delay into reverse. I took my 2000 Ford Explorer to the dealer to find out what the deal was with the slow engagement into reverse. Reverse is solenoid controlled, and it takes a few seconds to fully engage. I know many people with Fords that do the same thing. The only difference is my new 06 F350 dually. It has the torqueshift 5 speed auto. It does not have the same delay as my other Fords had. I am really impressed with that torqueshift trans. I have 5.4 V8, and with that new trans, my truck flies
