A/C Pulley Removal

I've got a '92 F-150 with the 4.9L enging....the bearings in the A/C pulley are shot...it makes when heck of a racket, and when I pulled the belt off, I can wiggle the darn thing all over the place. I don't know if the A/C even works or not, and don't really care...I'd like to get the bearing replaced. Problem is...I have no idea how the heck to do this or where to start. I'm usually pretty good with car stuff, but pretty clueless when it comes to A/C compressors. Is it that hard to get the stinkin' pulley off?! I can't find any info on how to do this...I need help!!! Please!!! Thanks!!

If it's the same as my 96 5.8 liter, there is a 10 mm or so bolt in the middle of the pulley, remove that and the little plate. Remove the C-clip and then slide the pulley off. I just did that and now I have to find out how to properly set up the new one.
Hope that helped.

I've still had no luck...when I try to turn the bolt, the clutch spins. I can't get anything on to hold it still to remove the bolt.

The bolt should not be that tight. It should come off if you hold the clutch with one hand while you use a ratchet in the other. If the clutch turns, you might be lucky and find that the A/C compressor is OK!

If you have one, use an impact wrench, just because it doesn't have much leverage to turn the clutch, just torque. So in turn, you don't need to hold the clutch as tight to stop it when using an impact wrench as you do with a regular wrench.
Good luck.

I do have an impact wrench...I'll have to give that a shot, thanks. I was told the A/C was working before the pulley started to let go. I'm hoping I'll have time to get to it tomorrow....I miss driving this thing!

I managed to get the bolt out and the plate off with the impact wrench...thanks! I'm thinking now I need to at least unbolt the compressor...I'm unable to locate the c-clip with the compressor in it's present position.

I know the auto parts stores lend out a tool called the "A/C Clutch Pully Remover" So, it may be on there so tight that even with the bolt off you will still need to get a puller to get it off the shaft. Every compressor is different. I bet if you called your local ford service department they would tell you for free.

I have to get some C-Clip off first, however, before I can pull the pulley off, correct? Where the compressor is located on the front of the engine, I can't see the front of it very well to locate the c-clip. Thank you everyone for your continued help!

Are you removing the coil and pulley too? In the case of my clutch, all I had to do was replace the front driven clutch... But, yours may be different. The C clips are not too hard, and then it should about fall apart for you...

Best of luck!
