When I bought my truck it had a generator. Since then I have replaced the regulator that was for the generator. Now I have a one wire alternator. But didn't replace the regulator.
Now what I would like to know is there a difference between regulators for generators and alternators. Being that they charge at different rates of speed am I getting all I can out of my regulator or am I overstressing my alternator.
I have already burnt out one alternator. The new one I put in is now acting like the one that burnt out. The lights get bright and then go dim.
I'm not smart in this area; but also don't you have to change out your headlight's too and tialight etc bulbs to accept a 12v verse your old 6 volt system. I would change you voltage regulator to a 12 volt one.
Hope this answer acouple thoughts or causes other's along more knowledgeable to chime in....
I may be wrong (it wouldn't be the first time), but if you have a 1 wire alternator, wouldn't it have an internal regulator? I'm afraid that I'm not alot of help here either, but someone should be able to help more.
on my 61 I had I took the generator off and ran a single wire gm alterator with a built in regulator. never changed any bulbs or anything, just ran a single wire from the alternator to the pos. side of the battery.never had any trouble and always stayed charged. I think in 64 or 65 they went to the alternator and extenal regulator so this ,as far as i know will only work for 61-63. i know it worked for me.
The regulators for generators and alternators are different. They will not function on the other style charging system. The one wire alternator needs NO regulator, it is built in. All you need is a power wire to the lone terminal of the alternator and the positive cable at the battery. The generator was a 12v, or he would have popped every bulb and blown up the battery!
See I told you there's alot more smarter people out there than me. But; I'm curious to know it an 64 below bulbs are different volts than say 65-66 Slick?
